Mark Cox with the Bridgestone Winter Driving School says it's important to realize you have limited grip or traction available to drive on. "Just because you hit a patch of ice doesn't mean something terrible is going to happen. The most important thing to do is to try to maximize your use of that grip. The best way to do that is to do one thing at a time: brake, steer or accelerate, and never combine the two."

It will help you slow the car down before you turn the steering wheel, and once you turn the wheel, you'll coast through while decelerating.

Cox says if you see an out-of-control car headed straight toward you, "the most important thing in that situation is to focus on the solution, not the problem."

He says staring at an open space will help to avoid target fixation. Also, watch your tires. "Realize that even a half-worn snow tire or winter tire will give you the performance similar to an all-season tire, and a half-worn all-season tire will give you the performance of a summer tire. And summer tires really have no place in winter driving."

Even you have chained on, it is no use against a thick black ice. There's only one way to minor the damage, which is turn your wheel facing 90 degree of the curve.
