Sun's winning time (14:35:43) is just within 1 second of the world record (14:34:56) set by Grant Hackett of Australia in 2001, and this winning time is currently the fastest time swam this year.

Sun Yang's winning time is faster than current Olympic and World champion Tunisia's Ous Mellouli's winning time in the 2009 FINA world Championship. Ous Mellouli won the gold medal in Beijing Olympic with a winning time of 14:40.84, and with the help of high-tech swimsuit, improved to 14:37.28 at the 2009 FINA World Championship in Rome.
