VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The countdown is on for the first big snowfall of the year and the City of Vancouver says crews are ready.

Ready to start their engines are fifty-two snow plows, dozens of snow blowers, and one giant military tanker-like machine, bought at an auction from the air-force base in Comox. "It has a very large tractor engine, it's got an eight-foot snow-blower on the front and it's extremely powerful."

Murray Whightman with the City says when the snow flies, the first priority is the major transportation arteries. "Every major route and bus route in Vancouver. It's divided into 14 routes; each driver is assigned a route and that driver is left on that route until we call them off."

Those include transit routes, bridges, and other main roads surrounding the hospitals.

No matter when the big storm hits, News1130 will be here for you, on-air, online and on your mobile device.
