VICTORIA (NEWS1130) - It looks like Carole James is sticking around, for now at least. The NDP has voted against holding a leadership convention next year.
The final count was 18 delegates in favour and 97 opposed, many wore yellow scarves to show their support for James who is calling it "a strong show of support."
This vote was crucial for James, whose leadership has come under fire for several weeks, with many party members questioning her ability to lead the NDP.
Now that is out of the way, James says she's hopeful the party can move forward. "Our team is getting on with the work. I am confident that this was a very clear message of support and a very clear message of unity coming to the party. The team is going to work together. They are all important members of the team and we're going to get the job done, that we need to."
Political Blogger Sean Holman says there is still tension in the party, but he tells us it isn't impossible for them to unite. "Carole James might have made it a little bit more difficult on herself, but that being said the NDP is a party that is very much about solidarity, very much about caucus solidarity, party solidarity."
It appears no decision has been made yet on re-instating ousted MLA Bob Simpson, but James says if he apologizes, she is more than willing to welcome him back to the NDP caucus.
Holman says seeing Simpson back in the NDP isn't out of the question. "I would not be surprised if James makes another bid to get him back in caucus now that she's got that show of support."
The meeting in Victoria will continue throughout Saturday afternoon.
