Several arrests, 10 injured after early morning shooting

15 Comment(s) 21 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Several people have been arrested following an early morning gang-related shooting near Oak Street and West 22nd Avenue.
Shortly after 2 a.m. police were flooded with 911 calls reporting shots fired in the area. When officers got there, they discovered ten victims. Of them, six men and two women remain in hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds. One person refused to be treated.
Constable Jana McGuinness calls this targeted shooting disturbing. "There's a lot of people that have been hurt. Some will be connected to the gang lifestyle, we're working through those backgrounds. The reality is this happened in a public place, on a public street. Innocent people could be caught up in this."
She adds some of the people who were hurt are not cooperating with police. Police are staying on alert as people may be concerned another gang war could be on the rise.
A number of witnesses have been taken in for questioning. No charges have been laid so far.
In a statement, Mayor Gregor Robertson said he too heard the shots at his home this morning. He calls the incident disturbing and says this type of "brazen" gang activity is unacceptable in our city.
Oak Street is still shut down to traffic in both directions between West 22nd and King Edward Avenue until further notice, News1130 Traffic will have updates every 10 minutes on the ones.
