BELLEVUE, WA. (NEWS1130) - It was one of the most sensational crimes the Pacific Northwest has ever seen. Seventeen years after a horrific triple murder in Washington State, two local men are getting their appeal.
Sebastian Burns and Atif Rafay, both from North Vancouver, still maintain they are being punished for crimes they didn't commit. The two will have their appeal heard early next month by the Washington State Court of Appeals.
Among the grounds for appeal, the defence wasn't allowed to call an expert witness and the prosecutor used racist remarks in his final arguments.
The pair was convicted in 2004 in the deaths of Rafay's parents and autisitic sister in Bellevue in order to get insurance money. They are each serving three consecutive life prison terms.
