Tax is the same.  I think everyone legally and tax-wise is the same.

But it makes a big difference psychologically to me.  Both parties are less committed to the relationship.

Just go sign the paper, and you don't have to have a wedding ma.

According to the BC Family Relations Act, the making of a claim for a division of property that says who gets what when a marriage ends doesn't apply to common-law relationships.

Look4chrisng: I don't know if common law can still use the Spouse Tax Credit.

tax is the same for sure.
I am not 100% sure about the legal part.  But at least the property is divided by each partner's effort.  Generally homemaker and income earner  are considered contributing the same effort.  Same effort means 50-50.  I guess a better lawyer may get more lor.

But sometime even in a divorce,  you want the woman to get more, since she usually has your kids

Living together under a common law sounds almost equal to living with sex partner to me.

Don't want to sign the paper sounds "wanting to leave a back door open" to me.

I am a supporter of signing that piece of "useless" paper.

I wonder why people prefer common law instead of marriage. If a person doesn't want to commit in a relationship, then he/she shouldn't get into a relationship with anyone in the first place. I won't mind living together first and then get married after, but common law is definitely not the final goal to me.

    Common Law

but according to the case law, the Supreme Court of Canada has recognized the utility and value of household labour since the 60s and 70s. On separation the common law spouse could potentially claim the other person's property.

Yes, aka trust claims. Yet, trust claims bona fide remedies are difficult to prove, especially in the content of common law relationships.

People really do that?  I know CRA can deem a couple as married on tax issues.

I think this kind of arrangement has more down size the money it gains.

A lots of things are more important that a little bit of money.

I personally don't believe in living together before marriage. If there's a decision to commit, it is a promise to yourself and the partner for life. "Trying a relationship" to me includes a backdoor and an indication of "in-security" in a loving relationship. So why bother?
