LILLOOET (NEWS1130) - The coroner is looking into a potentially fatal bear mauling near Lillooet.
A woman's body was found in a remote area Thursday night and it looked like an animal had been feeding on it.
"It's very rare, and it's usually attributed to defence of their young, or their food source, or often in the case of a black bear when it does happen it can be considered predatory," says Rod Olsen with the Conservation Officer Service. "At this point we can't even say that the bear caused the demise of the person, it could just be that the bear was feeding on it."
Four black bears have been put down and their DNA will be studied to see if they were responsible for feeding on the body. The bears were destroyed based on fur patterns matching traces of that found on the body, and their bite marks will also be studied.
Olsen said the large black bear population in the area is healthy and there is no shortage of food sources.
"There's going to be a large berry crop, it's looking good that way, and there's lots of grasses for them to eat, so there's nothing food related that way," he says.
"It's a very rare event, especially when you think of literally the thousands of encounters that happen every year in British Columbia between black bears and humans."
An autopsy on the woman is scheduled for Monday.
There have been two black bear fatalities in BC in the past 11 years.作者: tiffiant 時間: 2011-7-3 07:15
