VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's been a year since nearly 500 Tamil migrants arrived by ship in Esquimalt.
Tamil migrants usually settle in the Toronto area, where a sizable Tamil community already exists.
But David Poopalapillai with the Canadian Tamil Congress says many of them fell in love with BC and are being supported by churches and charities while they wait for their refugee hearings.
"Most of them are polishing up their English and upgrading other skills," he says. "It's been an extraordinary year for them. They are very happy to be in Canada. They're appreciating the freedom to walk on the streets without fear."
Seven of the migrants have been ordered deported, but Poopalapillai says all of them are appealing that decision. Two woman have given birth since arriving. http://www.canadiantamilcongress.ca/
