An earthquake centred in Virginia with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 shook a broad swath of the U.S. and Central Canada on Tuesday.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centred near Mineral, Va., about 134 kilometres southwest of Washington, D.C.
In Washington, many major buildings including the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol were evacuated. "I thought it was a big truck going down the street at first until the building started to sway," said CBC associate producer Caroline Laurin, who works in the CBC's Washington bureau. "Then we all laughed nervously."
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
People from across the U.S. Eastern Seaboard and Ontario tweeted that they felt the Earth move when the temblor struck at 1:51 p.m. ET.
The quake was also felt in New York City and in North Carolina.
CBC meteorologist Nick Czernkovich said the quake was felt so widely because it was so shallow — just one kilometre deep.
The jolt could be felt as far away as Toronto, where CBC provincial affairs reporter Mike Crawley said he felt the walls of the Ontario legislature shake.
CBC Radio Metro Morning host Matt Galloway also felt the shaking, saying via Twitter: “My house creaked and Earl the cat flattened himself on the floor.”作者: FiChai 時間: 2011-8-23 10:56
