VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - As the breeze picks up along the water this morning, crews are still struggling to contain a forest fire that broke out at UBC late last night.
The fire is just off SW Marine Drive and is now three-quarters of a hectare. BC Forests Service attack crews have pushed its way into the dense terrain. Crews say a water bomber will come in, but it will take at least the rest of the day to put out the fire.
Evacuation plans are ready; they're in place just in case the smoke becomes a big issue for some of the buildings along Marine Drive, where there are a lot of student residences. The evacuations would be voluntary, and at this point, no one is evacuated; it's just a contingency plan.
Battalion Chief Rod MacDonald says the fire is literally roaring in a small area in a gully, but it's the embers that are the real issue. "The concern is containment. We want to keep this fire as small as possible. Forestry firefighting is a specialty and we believe we've got the right people on the scene."
"At this time, we have a fair bit of territory between the forest area and the residents," says Deputy Chief Les Sziklai. "We also have Marine Drive in between."
Marine Drive will remain closed. Crews are asking people to stay away from Wreck Beach. Trails 6 and 7 are closed and being patrolled.
