If I buy it here, I might regret that the model in HK are both cheaper and more stylish.  The Best Buy ones are pretty cheap, and I can use it on the plane right away (but with no internet, and no power outlet, I wonder how handy it is to use on the plane..)

If I buy it in HK, I'm afraid I'll be tax'ed when I bring it back to Van.  And I kindda don't know where to buy... what's NCIX equivalent in HK?

Experience? Comment? Please help help, thanks!

I'm not expert. But for the entry level laptop...battery only lasts 2.5-3 hours w/o power supply...I don't think it's very useful on the flight...

In HK, most of the big electronic stores (Broadway, "fong jark" etc) has lots of selection. But of course you can visit those "computer city" ...

I was planning to be Eee PC in HK, but to my surprise, price is not too much difference... Here, it's about the same price but with more tax. So I decided to buy here because of the warrenty...

i find the model that i want (an HP) to be much more expensive in HK than in both here and the states

also, i am not able to find certain fujitsu and toshiba models in both hk and japan that are sold in here and in the states

in addition, according to this thread
http://www.loyaukee.com/forum/vi ... &extra=page%3D1
hk laptops sure look good...but seems that you get less in terms of performance for the money

so...i guess its up to you to decide where to get your computer...but for me...i will definitely get it here...or in the states if possible

I will first do a research online to determine the exact brand & model I want.  If that is only available in HK, then basically there is no choice.  However, if the model I want is available at both places, then it is just a matter of comparing price and warranty issues.

where to compare price though?

HK has too many small computer shops, and I really hate the feeling of finding out I paid a few hundreds too expensive than the store on the next block, etc.. ~_~

If I ever need to buy a notebook from Asia. I will only buy Japanese models because of the size. Panasonic and NEC would be something I can consider. The Panasonic offers a lot more models in their "Let's Note" series (Toughbook) than here.

Other than that, laptops in here are quite cheap compare to HK.

I guess you may try going to some HK computer forums and ask people there if they know the approximate street price.  Once you have that you can then compare to the price here.  If you decided to buy in HK then I guess you just need to walk around in MK and shop around for price then decide from there.

Just make up a fake receipt of it like 50 % and let them tax it..
作者: kaimui22    時間: 2008-3-17 00:26

depends on what brand of computer you want..
some international brands are actually more expensive in HK..but of course, you get to save the tax in HK

I was worried about the warranty too..but we still got 2 EeePCs from HK..because in HK you can 討價還價 and also ask for more stuff..haha..like free screen protector..etc etc

BTW, in HK, there are some really weird brandnames..some China and Korea laptops I've never heard of. But those laptops are really cheap...just functional to go online.

If you do want to buy a computer in HK, you should goto Golden..Golden is generally a lot cheaper than Mongkok. Wanchai has several computer malls too..but the one beside the MTR (the actual wanchai computer centre) is the most expensive I've seen.

If talking about bargaining, TW is the best place to buy computer. Buy a notebook, they will give you a bag full of free stuff that you can't even put the laptop in the bag.

Making a fake receipt? The custom is not dumb.. there is something called the Internet and they can research. Why risk yourself being blacklisted to save a few hundreds?

I brought a DELL with international warranty with on site service in Vancouver from Hong Kong December of last year. Going throught the customer from airplane, no probem because they think I brough it locally.

Guy,

Fake receipt do not work, because they have a list of all model. Besides, they only trust receipt with payment proof.
