OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS1130) - Canada's 41st Parliament will get to work today in Ottawa, and things will be a little different this fall. Prime Minister Harper is ready to take full advantage of his Conservative majority government.
House leader Peter Van Loan says the government's focus will be the economy and justice. He says the Tories will continue to implement budget measures, including small-business incentives and family tax credits.
After six years of minority rule, the Prime Minister may also have things a little easier over the next few months with the two main opposition parties lacking permanent leaders.
The work to reshape Ottawa and put a 'Harper Tory stamp' on Parliament begins almost immediately.
Bills that have been sidelined or voted down previously will be passed, including a modern copyright law, and what's now being called the Safe Streets and Communities Act.
It's a bundle of crime legislation that will introduce mandatory minimum sentencing for some crimes, limit house arrest, end automatic pardons for serious crimes, crackdown on organized drug crime, and increase powers for citizens to defend themselves and their property.
To the Tories' advantage, there are bills to scrap public funding for political parties and add 30 new seats to the House of Commons, mostly in suburban ridings in BC, Alberta and Ontario, where the Conservatives have done well.作者: tiffiant 時間: 2011-9-19 06:54
