Warning issued after Surrey high school student dies of bacterial infection

METRO VANCOUVER — Fraser Health has issued a warning after a Grade 10 student from Surrey died from a bacterial infection on Tuesday.

Global has obtained a written letter notifying parents, guardians and staff members of Clayton Heights Secondary about the sudden death of the 15-year-old student that was most likely caused by a bacterial meningococcal infection.

According to Health Canada, meningococcal disease is caused by a bacterium known as meningococcus.

In rare instances, the germ overcomes the body's natural defenses, and causes serious diseases, including bacterial meningitis, an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and meningococcemia, a widespread infection of the blood and other organs.

Fraser Health says the symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, confusion and/or a reddish-purple, tiny, bruise-like skin rash.

Health authorities are working to identify close contacts who may have been exposed between September 8 and 19, and provide preventative antibiotics if needed.

They say people who were in the same household, have shared sleeping quarters, or have shared things that have saliva on them, including such things as drinking containers, straws, water bottles, and musical instrument mouthpieces, may need preventative treatment.

However, the letter reassures parents that classroom exposure to meningococcal meningitis does not put them or their child at increased risk.

Fraser Health says anyone who experiences the signs or symptoms of meningococcal infection should contact their physician immediately. Anyone who's had close contact as described above is asked to call the Cloverdale Public Health Unit at 604-575-5100 or Healthlink BC at 811
