Just want a thread to track snow conditions of Whistler/Local Mountains, or even conditions of the interior or Washington State ski-resorts.

If anyone have gone shredding, please come back and report on the snow conditions! I hope that this thread can stay up for the entire season helping people gauge whether they should it the slopes or not. Thanks!

Survived my opening ski day this season on Whistler yesterday and I'm so not ready for it yet (physically).  Fun to meet my ski buddies after 7 months but I'm now dead tired.  I know I should go up to local mountains to warm up first.

Anyway, back to snow condition.  Whistler, whole mountain is 95% covered like a mid-season.  You could ski all the way down to village without seeing a rock anywhere close.  Everything above round house level, condition was nice, very nice.  Everything below is hard pack and could be icy on high traffic runs.

Whistler @ Dec 18th

Mixed with every conditions.  Suppose to have 8-10 cm of new snow which we don't quite found anywhere except in the bowls up top.  Up there, you could nice ankle deep powder.  Once you get back to groomers, they are all very icy especially the heavy traffic ones.  However, the blue sky and nice sun compensated everything.

Cypress @ Dec 18th
My friend reported that it was very icy

I was planning to go to cypress for my 2nd time of this season last saturday but couldn't make it at last

later my frd told me I didn't miss much. It was very icy, worst than my last visit.

I used to ski there once a year while visiting Calgary (brothers there).  Not this winter though since I switch my ski plan to Lake Tahoe on Feb.

I went to Cypress yesterday. Yeah, Icy. Lots of runs closed due to lack of snow. Light rock slide scratching up skis and boards like madness on the only run which Raven Ridge serviced. Only plus was the blue sky and unlimited visibility.

Any C Hing been Big White before?
I'm planning to there.  Any suggestion to me?
Thanks.
作者: AdminAssist    時間: 2011-12-23 00:16

i prefer SunPeaks, then SilverStar, last choice Big White.

if you go for Big White, for new visitor, book upper village "Big White Village" (higher than main village). it is easier to access to village, shops and restaurants (to main central area).

personally, i like Happy Village area, lots of new, nice view and "quiet' hotels. (if you have ur equipments, NO need rental, cook ur own food, this area is best choice), lots of the case, you have to walk down , then take Gondola up or walk up to the main village.

again, if you willing to take 97C , better go Kamloops, to SunPeaks, sure you will love it.

read these two threads related to BigWhite first, maybe

If you are beginner or travel with a group with big variety of skills, I think BigWhite is still the most family friendly resort among the 3.

我21~23號去左Big White.

just got back from night ski on cypress

started off on bunny hill for warming up with another frd, but turned out it was very icy and little powder so right after the first time we went straight to lion express for collin
majority of the run was good, ice was packed but at least a bit more powder.........but the last part near the base, it was quite icy.......I could actually see a big chunk of ice reflecting light.......

then went to the other side of the mountain for eagle express
so much better!! although some packed snow too
and there was snow-making going on

over all it was a fun ride tonight~

雪不算多, 總完全覆蓋所有run, 有一天因部份有太陽直照, 溫度又只得-1c, 比較易結冰, 整體都十分好.

每晚都有新雪3-10cm補充, 如未能適應滑powder雪, 會比較辛苦.

Snow condition update for Whistler @ Jan 8th:

Hard pack on the upper half, started to get a bit slushy around mid-station.  We had a mix of everything : flurry, light rain, sun, fog, flat light, you name it.

This week, Whistler is pretty dry whole week until weekend.

Tonight, I will go up to Cypress for nite skiing.  Will report back.

Snow condition update for Cypress @ Jan 11th nite:

Snow making magic.  If there were no snow gun at Cypress (snow gun only exists since Olympic), it would be a piece of ice last night.

It was pretty cold last night.  Those runs that covered by snow gun were okay condition.  But busy spots were all icy after snow got "pushed" away.  Those blue runs on the Eagle chair side had the best coverage.  On the Lion side, Horizon has no snow making and icy (Humpty Dumpty has no snow making but better condition).  Looks like Collins had many snow guns but I didn't go down there and wouldn't know the condition.  No luck anywhere up on the Sky chair where only ice to be found.

It was my first visit to Cypress this year.  Snow coverage could be better this time of the year.
作者: B2L2    時間: 2012-1-12 14:48

Friend mentioned to me last night about something new in Cypress:

"* On Wednesdays we will be hosting "Singles Night - Speed Dating" starting at 5 PM - no more lounging around in your pajamas on Wednesday evenings this season - plenty of specials, fun and prizes."

I don't have any details about it, so don't ask me.

Nobody went up after the snow fall???  Really?

I was up at Whistler on Saturday with the 5cm new snow.  Mountain was packed with people as expected.  It was so windy at certain direction (like Emerald chair) that really hurt my face.  They said it was 30-50km/h wind.  It was foggy and we didn't go up to peak even Peak chair was opened later in the morning.

Back to snow condition, good powder if you know where to find it.  Otherwise groom runs were packed with good snow with bare spots every 2 turns.

Sunday should be much better after the grooming and couple more cm of new falls.  Too bad I didn't have the chance to go again.

Friends went up to Cypress on Sunday.  Reported the chair line up was 15-20mins easy.  But they enjoyed a blue sky day.  Nice.
作者: BiscottiGelato    時間: 2012-1-16 19:43

Went to Blackcomb Sunday. Sunny with Clouds, but down to as low as -18C at 7th heaven, one of the coldest i've ever been at Whistler.

Snow condition is so-so. Was with a friend that's somewhat beginner so had to stick with major runs, and those were fairly bare and occassionally hears the sound of ice. Could not come across anything that I can describe as 'powerder' condition even through a handful of blue and black runs from 7th Heaven. I would think at least another 20cm of snow base is required for a significant better experience.

Could not make it to Whistler as we were at creeping pace.

Whistler @ Jan 29th

Survivor day, worst day this season although they had tons of snow.

Early morning, heavy rain at the lower half of mountain. Fog up + strong wind on the upper area (Peak chair closed, T-bar opened). Everyone was packed at the mid mountain for the 1-2 chair lifts. Snow was heavy, sticky and uneven.

Only good thing was that most people can't withstand this weather combo and gone before lunch hour.  The mountain was so empty.  This means no more wait line for those who hardcore enough to stay, while the weather keep improving later the day.

作者: sko    時間: 2012-1-31 14:00

- Seymour = a large bunny hill mountain.
- The chair and the guest service booth are very far apart = long walk/cross-country ski
- Mostly beginners on the slopes (I used to come here couple times a year with my elementary school: grade 4-7)
- Nothing for intermediate/advanced skiiers
- Ladies Night: 45-min wait at the chair, maybe a min ski time coming down (boxing day shopping style)

Verdict: save your money and head to Whistler instead.

I have heard my frd saying the runs on seymour is quite flat

how come there is a 45min wait till at the chair for ladies night?
i have never spent more than 10min waiting in line at cypress even when last time only one side of the mountain was opened and everyone had to go to the same chairlift
I am quite scared of having a lot of beginners on the slope....
hard to predict where they wanna go
plus I am not that good either, which means lots of collision to happen if I go there ><

I stayed mostly on the green runs, so it was not bad that day~
作者: B2L2    時間: 2012-2-13 13:40

Back from our first visit to Revelstoke and Kicking Horse.  No, we aren't going heli or cat skiing, just stayed at the resort.  Those are too rich for our blood, maybe we will try cat skiing eventually (when there is a storm).

Snow condition was okay but no new snow for the whole week before our arrival means there was no powder.  Good that the weather stayed cool and dry which kept an okay snow condition.  Hard pack and not icy.

Kicking Horse really kicked our ass.  Basically only one green run, which is their cat track.  Blue runs are all steep groomers, which is long and STEEP.  Even the easiest one will be rated as black in local mountains.  Tons of black and double.  Chairlifts aren't linked up properly.  This means you jump off the double black at the top 1/3, you then ski the steep runs down the 2/3.  Total is ~1000m vertical each run.  Sooooooo tiring.

We decided to take an easy day off to Lake Louise after Kicking Horse (1.5 hrs away).  Turned out to be a bad decision.  Worst snow condition at Lake Louise in 4 of my visits.  Rocks here and there, snow was worse than Kicking Horse.  Good that we only do a day trip.

Next stop was back to Revelstoke.  An even bigger vertical mountain, top to bottom run is like 1500m vertical.  Chairlift is slightly better this time, at least we could loop at the upper mountain and the back face.  Again only 1 green and groomers are all STEEP.  Here they don't rate black into single or double, only black color.  Once we entered a crazy narrow couloir, one ski width and ~300m vertical drop, and it was a marked black run.  Without able to see the exit, we decided not to take it but ended up with a tough time to get out from the cliff zone.  After that, we just spent most time in the bumps and trees.  The back blow needs a short 5mins hike or more depends on which way you want to enter it.

Both Revelstoke and KH is not mean for beginner.  Even for intermediate, you wouldn't quite able to enjoy it.  But if you're looking for challenge, they offered a lot within the chairlift or with only a short hike.

- Brian

Whistler @ Feb 19th

Reported to have a pretty good snow fall towards the end of last week, so we were all hype up.  Oh well, fog kept following us whole morning, and more important we never noticed the 10-15 cm of snow on popular runs.  Some groom runs were even icy.

The new snow must still exist somewhere.    Lucky that after lunch, we were able to go up Harmony.  Jumping down from the Harmony ridge granted you ankle deep powder everywhere.  Although fog still come and go, all you could hear was screaming joy and people laughing like a kid there.  Fun, although I still struggling with powder half of the time.

That sounded such an awesome trip: both KH and Revelstoke! I would love to go one day. How were the blacks at Revelstoke compared to the ones at Whistler (both single and double)? Did any of the blacks require vertical "jumps"? Are you a skiier? Any awesome mogul terrains??
作者: B2L2    時間: 2012-2-22 11:21

Revelstoke doesn't rate their blacks into single or double, so that's one problem to compare.

To give you some background, our group is all skier and we like moguls.  Front side, all black doesn't requires jump or hike.  They are either constant steep pitch groom runs (like beginning section of Saddle@Whistler but 5x the length), or mogul (similar to Ratfink@Whistler)

Back side is basically one bowl like the size of Whistler Bowl followed by all tree runs at the bottom.  If you want to enter from the very top, you will need to hike >15 mins (we didn't do that).  If you want to enter from the side, you could do that in ~1 mins hike.  You don't need to jump in (unless you want to).  Even the narrow couloir that we went, there is no jump, just super narrow and long.

Mogul runs?  In between the trees of the back side, there are many choices.  The open area under the chair also gives one long mogul runs (took me like 5mins to come down, so tiring).

2012.02.26 - Another day @ Whistler: sunny but COLD (-16 at peak); packed powder slopes, super fluffy powder snow at low-volume places; perfect day to do your blacks and double blacks; AND GMC Race Centre was open fyi (icy track but superrr fun; loved how they timed you). True that Cypress is as expensive, $39 + tax for night skiing that what I spent last night.

Cypress @ Feb 29th night
* 35cm overnight made the powder call but unfortunately could only go after work
* Sky chair wasn't open until 6:35 (perfect timing) but it was jam with people
* untouch powder disappeared in 15 mins
* the powder was knee deep up at Sky but I have to admit that I suck in powder that deep, so tiring

You'd need an edge card for Whisler. We have a 5-day one; works out to be under $68 per day.

Whistler doesn't do night, but it starts early. Last week, we were on lifts by 9:00 AM, and ended when the last chair ended. Ate breakfast in the car (McD), and no real lunch (ate something quick during washroom break). That could give you a good 7-8-hr ski if you really want to~

Once you advance more in your snowboarding, you will understand why people prefer going to Whistler even they have to pay more, wake up earlier, drive longer, etc, etc.  That $20 difference is nothing.

For me, I go wherever my friends go.

actually even my frds who are very good in sbing, they still prefer cypress over whistler.....^^
作者: BiscottiGelato    時間: 2012-3-2 16:31

if you consider that you'll waste a day anyways, which almost everyone's work day is worth over 3 figure, then it's much better to have that day spent at Whistler than Cypress. $20 difference is nothing when your investment including time is multi hundred dollars.

And what's the reason your friends prefer Cypress over Whistler?  I'll be surprise if ticket price is the top reason.

Whistler 10-days Edge card is $62/per day (and have a bonus day before X'mas).  Of course, after you ...

You managed/are managing to do 11 days at Whistler this season?? That's hardcore!

2012.03.04 - Another day @ Whistler: TERRIBLE weather condition - pouring rain at Lot 6, pouring snow above Excalibur Gondola , very windy and foggy with poor, poor visibility (especially at top of Glaciers). Slope condition was better at Whistler than Blackcomb today. Nevertheless, snow was awesomely powdery towards the end of the day. Our favorites of the day were the Habitat Terrain Parks (thankfully did not fall and hit my head this time) at Whistler, and Blackcomb’s Snow Cross Track. <3

- 7th Heaven was closed (at least when we attempted it)
- GMC Race Track was closed for little kids
- Glaciers had a sign that said “Advanced/Experts Only” (due to poor visibility I think)
- Peak Chair was closed
- Unlike last week, super powdered moguls on Black Magic, Little Whistler, Glacier Bowl, etc were COMPLETELY GONE! ALL GROOMED OUT! In fact, most of the moguls were gone this week; very disappointing for Skiers.

This season, I spent 8 days at Whistler and 2 nites at Cypress so far.  With 3 days left on my EdgeCard, I'm looking forward for the coming spring pass (usually available by end of March, which is a full pass for Spring).  So by season ends, I probably hit 16-17 days.

In my group, most of them were on their 13-14 days already.  The max should be 18 by yesterday.

Back to snow condition yesterday (March 5th)

Forecast said rain shower and freezing level at 1800, so we were expecting a wet wet day.  Turned out the forecast was wrong, freezing level drop down to 800m but still very strong wind.  It mean snowing all day long.  Peak chair didn't open and Harmony was white out all day.  You could feel the powder everywhere (boot deep), just not able to see them.    Front side has cut out powder on non-groomer (few cm), and we spent most of our time up and down on Emerald.

yes, ticket. They don't want to pay $100 for a ticket (not going there so often so no point to get edge card)
also they don't want to get up so early in the morning cuz whistler closes early, and I think they also mention the cat track that they hate @@

on the other end, cypress is so much closer and opens for longer hours
we can get enough sleep and go up in the afternoon
the gold medal card we all got give us pretty good deal on the tickets too

嘉嘉 : one day, you will have to go and judge Whistler yourself.    EdgeCard works for 1, 3, 5, 10 days, FYI.

sko: we were there on the same day.  I took one run down little Whistler in absolute white out condition ~noon, it scared me off.  If you know where to find mogul on Whistler front side, there were a lot yesterday.  Our usual path, Ratfink and down the trees through the tower (right under Peak-to-Peak).  Middle section underneath Emerald chair has good sized bumps too.  All soft powder covered.  Creekside, Jimmy's Joker and Wildcard were full of bumps though not powdery.

Couple pics from Whistler today, my friends are there today and tomorrow hunting for powder.

hmm.....I guess so ^_^
but no plan for whistler yet~

We are thinking about a sun peak trip next year, woohooo~~
作者: sko    時間: 2012-3-6 08:31

I always wondered what it'd be like to ski under Peak 2 Peak. I can't ski through trees though. I always feel like I'd ski into one. lol~

And lucky friends of your's! I was just telling my coworker yesterday how much I wish I could take yesterday off and today (Tuesday) off to Whistler. I was stalking Whistler's live-cams around noon yesterday, but it seemed quite foggy still. Maybe it cleared completely shortly after that.

Friends said it was a mixed up condition at Whistler yesterday, but at least the sun broke out for them.  Lucky bastards, kept sending me pictures to kill me.

The tree run under P-to-P (Whistler side) is actually quite wide.  Just expect to have huge mogul at the narrow spot (usual tree runs), but usually there are more than one paths to go down.  It will then cut the cat track back to Emerald, so it is very convenient.
Pics from my friend on this run:

2012.03.24 - Whistler - best day of the season for me thus far: sunny but with packed powder; only downside was the longer lineups.

This thread had been quiet for a long while but I continued going up to Whistler almost every weekend during the beautiful spring time.  Blackcomb finally closed this Monday and May 27th marked my last snow day this season.

I checked my EdgeCard last night and this seasons I visited Whistler/Blackcomb 19 times.  Together with another 6 days I spent at other resorts, it came to a total of 25 days on snow.  That's a record for myself.  Have to thanks my wife for allowing me to chase my skiing hobby.  I was away a lot during Winter, I know.

Now a long wait of 6.5 months ahead.  ^_^

結果你多我一倍有多    佩服
你係每個weekend都去個度住一晚?  定每次都即日來回

今年我冇去過Whistler:tk_42
本身想5月22號去一次但結果天氣唔好....放棄了
作者: B2L2    時間: 2012-5-31 21:32

All 即日來回 day trips for me this year.  Usually leaving home ~6:30am and ski till the last lift.  Staying there overnight often is just too bloody expensive.

Our group is planning to go up Whistler for sightseeing and hiking this summer.  Anyone interested to join?  :)  That'll be something new for me.
