HUP (hardware upgrade) basically means when you're renewing your contract, they offer you a discounted price for a new phone.

You could even renew contract and get HUP before your contract ends (with a fee).  Read this:
http://redboard.rogers.com/2011/ ... -early-with-rogers/

they have different promotion now and then.  I just did my HUP to an HTC 3D Evo for $0.

That's wasting money to join those plans with 3 year contract...

[$57/mo x 36months - $300 (EVO 3D market value)]/36 months = $48.70/mo + tax + system fees. Do you really utiltize the "full" dollar power of that monthly fee of $48.70? I believe a normal user won't need more than $40.

And the worst part is that you are "stickened" to the contract... When you opt out you have to pay for that...

Personally I won't say that's a deal...

Bell.

Hehe...

Can't tell Bell is way better than Rogers... For the network in urban/sub-urban area, no big difference... drop calls should be roughly the same between the two.

As far as I know Bell customer service to old customer is sxxks... I really get no clue why Rogers can still have a better customer review than Bell...

Well, worth or not depends.

My current month fee is $44 (I even have roadside assistant for $5).  Of course, there are cheaper alternative these days with those new providers.

Under current Rogers rule, you could do HUP in 30months.  This period changed every one a while.  For my HUP recently, I'm 20 months in my 3-yr plan only.  (I also did HUP 9 months in my plan before.)

I wouldn't say HUP works for everyone, but it isn't necessary bad all the time.  Of course do your math and be smart.

Thanks~

It really doesn't matter as there's no such thing as "deals" from the big 3, just perks for signing up. Bell does have the newest "locked tight" phones (including many of Bell's junk app in there). Rogers on the other hand, gives free PS3, tablet etc... it's your call.

For Bell's network performance, I am not too sure where you are most of the time, but my experience with Bell's 3G network is less than ideal (my gf has a Bell's SGS). I have been constantly doing speed tests, and get reception info from service mode by typing *#*#4636#*#*in CM7.1

I come from Fido/Rogers and I find their network at least more reliable than Bell for the following reason:
- Rogers has more allotment 850MHz and 1900MHz spectrum than anyone since the spectrum auction in the early 2000. They are the only one running GSM on both frequency. They are now moving onto the 700Mhz against Mobilicity and other small ones.
- Rogers runs both 2G GSM and 3G UTMS and LTE on both 850MHz and 1900MHz, therefore the phone can switch between 2G and 3G in areas as needed. Bell only has 3G running, 2G is their CDMA network. So many times I get Emergency Call Only with Bell in covered area when my Rogers shows I am on EDGE.
- All Bell's 3G traffics are routed through pda.bell.ca, a proxy server that gets over-crowded with traffic all the time; ping time is slow and the speed gets hammered.
- If you use A-GPS, Bell's scarce tower locations in city makes A-GPS extremely inaccurate without a full GPS lock.
- Bell is expensive, Bell is running 2 different networks (CDMA and UTMS) which are two different things, compare to Rogers who is running just one network with 2 systems. In terms of network optimization and expansion, who will be faster?

Telus is the same story, they are building the network from scratch just before the Olympics.

Finally, off-contract SGS2 is only $549, and you can sell it after for whatever $$ is worth. Bell's SGS2 cannot be unlocked cheaply yet (they lock it differently), the phone is useless and they won't even give out the unlock code even you pay them. Rogers could unlock for $50 or free when contracts end.

I deal with Virgin, Bell, Telus, Rogers and Fido at work, each of these company tell me a different story. Basically I am just combining the facts and my observation in the past.

These guys are there to take your money! When picking up a new plan, asks yourself a few questions:
- What is included?
- How much total I have to pay each month?
- Do I need this?
- Will I be fine without it?
- Do I need that many?

Too many times people pay too much without realizing because they are offered too much. Who needs $30 for 6GB when your usage is under 500MB? You could go for flex-data for $25/500MB and go to $30/1GB when that happens. Same thing applies to voice plan, do I need 5pm free for $5 extra a month when I could wait till 7pm? Do I need 100 min extra for $10 more? Why pay for 1000 SMS when you do less than 10 a day? etc... paying $5 less a month is $60 a year. It may not be a lot to you, but imagine they do that to 1000 more people, it's pure extra revenue to them with too little extra costs.

If they sell Bell's phone and unlocks it, meaning they have someone from the inside (Bell) to give them the code.

My friend works in Rogers too and can do that as well, it seems if you know the right person, magic could happen.

I have an impression that if it will be more cost effective to buy a new phone (brand new) and port it to, let say, fido?

I am tired of those monthly plans with contract... Couple months ago I checked over my monthly usage it's 150 mins daytime (250 mins plan), 700 mins at night (unlimited), 30MB data (1G data plan), 100 sms (2500 sms plan), and my monthly bill is $78/mo after tax... , since I have 6 months left with my contract, I called into Rogers and they can only fix my bill to $70 after tax, which I think is still very expensive in terms of my usage...

Nowadays those data plans are sky-high expensive... It's pointless to pay $25-$30 for the data which I don't need that much...

wa? only 30mb?
you don't really use data at all, do you?

for me I dont stream video and music at all (excluding using wifi)
regular things like facebook, email, whatsapp, a bit of browsing
comes to about under 200mb a month

my plan is near $70/month too, after tax
similar to urs, I have 1GB data
then 200min day time, unlimited after 5pm
fab 10 numbers

but good thing is that my contract is only 1 year (had to pay $250 for the phone instead of $0 for a 3 yr contract. but i did my math, paying $250 to save 24 more months x $70 = $1680...... )
or else I wouldn't have signed it up

Well, I think this logic is somewhat wrong.

Assuming after your one year contract, you're able to go somewhere else and get a very similar plan for less than $70, say $60 for the coming 24 months.  Then the money you saved in 3 years total will be ($70-60)x24 = $240. (this assume that you don't need another phone when switching)

You save $1680 only if you stop using cellphone all together a year later.

If today, you can't find a plan that suit you for less than $70, do you believe that you could do find a plan for say $60 a year later?  Well, it is the future, so who knows.

well yes, only if I stop my phone services
just that I don't want to be tied up for 3 years for sure

who knows if there is any better deal later
or I might switch to wind or mobilicity one day

Data has higher profit margin than anything, therefore EVERYONE will capitalize on that.

Since Telus and Bell moved to 3G UMTS, meaning their budget lines like Koodoo and Virgin and Chatr will accept any WCDMA 850/1900 MHz SIM phone. With those, you can go month to month if you don't owe them anything (or "the tab"). Therefore it is more economical for those who use little but hate the big monthly bill.

Again, these guys are there to take your money. Why you want to be leashed for years? I honestly think that losing the freedom of choice and bargaining power for a free and locked phone? I rather take a non-branded phone over any carrier phone any time.

I am paying Fido $53 a month, including 300 min, free after 5pm, CID, VM, SMS, Email, 6GB Data... (I am on 3 years contract now, don't think it could go any lower...). I was contract-free for 6 months before Fido finally gave in to my demand when I indicated I will move to someone else.

Philip
