In the old days...

Before Tax Tips: 1.0 + 1.0 x 5% (GST) + 1.0 x 10% (tips before tax) = 1.15
After Tax Tips: 1.0 + 1.0 x 5% (GST) + 1.05 x 10% (tips after tax) = 1.155
Tips Diff = 0.005 = 0.5%

Right now...
Before Tax Tips: 1.0 + 1.0 x 12% (HST) + 1.0 x 10% (tips before tax) =  1.22
After Tax Tips: 1.0 + 1.0 x 12% (HST) + 1.12 x 10% (tips after tax) = 1.232
Tips Diff = 0.012 = 1.2%

It's funny for SOME people they are still get used to the "OLD" days...
And, for some (actually, quite a few) fellow Chinese Canadians (or mentally still Chinese but not Canadian), for $100 meals they used to pay $2 or $5 for the tips, especially in Chinese restaurants...

Try to put it this way, tips, as a bonus, is a reward to the acceptance of service. In reality, both parties (consumers and servers) are trying to draw from the obligation - one is trying to pay less tips and the other is trying to provide less service. In my observation, Chinese consumers play quite an important role...

I think I have never visited a poor service restaurant with cosumers paying high tips in gross (10% or more, generally speaking)...

If one is more get used to the local culture, one is willing to play more tips to the server.

So, in this case, if I'm going to tip 15% before tax, how much % should I key in ?  That's the question we were discussing yesterday.
Our lunch bill was $100, after tax was $112.  I keyed in 15% on the machine as tipping, that was $16.8.  If the tipping was $15 (15% of $100), I should key in 13.39%....   My math is poor in front of the restaurant counter.

I thought if you are so insistance to pay the correct tips, instead of paying tips through the machine, you should try paying table tips in "cash" for your convenience.

in your case, I'd just choose the (AMOUNT) function. punch in $15 in tips if the service was average.

if the service was excellent, choose the (%) function, punch in 20%.

WHO CARES

I always don't quite like the tipping culture in restaurant.  Why do the customers have to use this extra cost to control the quality of the waitor's service?  The quality of service should be monitored by the manager/owner instead.

- Customer gets bad service from waitor when ordering a dish, we sometimes blame b/c not enough tips.
- Customer gets bad service from salesperson when ordering a merchandise, we sometimes blame the manager for not teaching the staff well.

To me, both types of business do similar things.
作者: 快樂牛郎    時間: 2012-1-2 14:52

Tips is ok because it keeps the menu prices low and people who pay little tips get to be subsidized by those who pay a lot.

That's really funny to read this post......why ppl  r always so "cheap" ?? If u really enjoy the restaurant, enjoy the food, enjoy the service....why bother to calculate the tips before/after tax??? If u guys don't have money, don't go out to eat!! Just cook @ home or go to food court!!! Servers who work in restaurant really deserve to get tips from customers....they take ur orders, bring out food, clean up ur tables, etc!! They also need to smile all the time even they need to face many annoying customers........

i wouldn't say they "deserve" to get tips while people who work in the kitchen washing dishes don't get much tips

this is in their job descriptions

First of all, I think there are exceptional servers out there who deserve higher wage. However, I think there are some terrible servers out there who takes tips for granted. I really believe in tips should be give in relationship to quality of service received, not a set percentage. I would often pay 30%+ for a good experience (regardless of type of restaurant); but there are times I would refuse to pay any tips due to a sup-par quality of service.

In many countries (Switzerland, Germany, Japan, etc.), tips are considered offensive by waiters, as they truly believe in service quality standards, and take pride in their profession. On the same token, would you tip a bank teller for processing your bank transaction? They often have to deal with difficult guest and still put up a smile. How about a Bus Drivers? Flight attendant? Janitor? Supermarket cashiers? Don't they deserve to be tipped as much as a Waiter/Waitress?

I don't see how a waiter can be exceptionally good.  They can be extra friendly but whatever they do is not rocket science.  Maybe the norm is that they should be doing a poor job so the not-so-bad ones become exceptional.

Not sure about AB and the restaurants you go to..
I think most resto here pay close to minimum hourly rate for servers.
They make most of their income from tips (esp higher end restaurants).
I do get good service in Canada but not from all restaurants. Sadly, I don't want to say it out but most Asian restaurants didn't try hard on improving their service.
They are selling the "value" instead of a dining experience. i.e. service isn't a big part of it.

But when you go to those high end restaurants with "good services", their menu prices are already inflated to include such premium services.  There's no reason to pay those waiters extra either.

I was googling to make sure that i am not wrong on assuming that servers get only minimum pay... I was shock to find out that some (in the states at least) get WAY less than minimum on their base pay...

this guy was getting $2.35 per hour...
On his table tip:
Cooks get 5%. Bartenders get 2%. Busers get 3%. Hosts get 2%c of my ‘reported’ tip earnings.

I earned $2.35 per hour for my work. Worked 11 hours. So I got $47.

You never work in a hotel. A lot of hotels in Richmond only pay $10.00 per hour. A housekeeping staff needs to clean a room in half an hour. It's really a hard job. Lots of guests said they enjoy staying in the hotel very much but not paying any tips to the housekeeping staff, not to mention they did not pay anything to the Front Desk staff.
作者: MoiRhapsody    時間: 2012-1-5 02:38

at least...you don't get burn ...like 10 times a day.......until you don't see them as a "burn".....as a housekeeping staff..and you don't really need to deal between customers and chefs...which is a hell a lot of drama...

So twisted mind. Many other people work very hard in various industries too. It is not customers' fault for the restaurant industry to underpay their staff. I rather restaurants increase their prices then forcing customers to pay stupid tips.

Tipping is a stupid idea, the people are getting paid to do their job, why pay them more?? If in situation where they do above and beyond their roles, they then deserve an extra reward.

To say that food servers work so hard, so low pay that they need to rely on tips, it is a very twisted truth. It should be the worker to ask for the right salary from the owner, not from the customers.

I am in the service industry too, I often get tips and gifts because I went above and beyond to help my clients. I don't get paid a lot too but I get a commission off from my fees so I could make a living this way. I am getting paid to do my job, and the company pays me enough to do that, so I never expects extra from my clients.

you only gain respect when you don't ask for tips
作者: FiChai    時間: 2012-1-5 15:01

I have a believe that for the whatever price it charged, it should includes food and service already. For example, most fast food restaurants offer simple food with minimal service, that's why their prices are relatively cheap; but for a fine dining restaurant at a 5 star hotel would offer much quality food and service, and thus their prices are much more expensive. Therefore, regarding for the tips/gratuity, since the price on the menu already includes food and service charge, only if the server provides extraordinarily good service, I really don't think why they should get more tips than usual. And yea, I only calculate tips before tax.
