I am a HK and Canadian citizen.
I have:
Canadian Passport
HK ID
No HK passport
If I go to China (Beijing) for travel, do I still need to apply for a VISA or can I enter with my 回鄉證?
You can enter with your 回鄉證. That's what my parents did back in Oct. to Beijing. I actually didn't have it, and need to spent hundreds on China VISA for a family of 3.
You should be fine with 回鄉證, I don't know if HK passport is needed to be used in conjunction with it tho.
On another note, unless my life is depended on it, I'd try to avoid showing 回鄉證 and Canadian Passport at the same time tho.

But isn't 回鄉證 only use when you enter China from Hong Kong? If you enter China from Canada you can't use 回鄉證?

Just beware than if you don't use you Canadian passport, you are declaring you are *not* a Canadian. I once used HK ID card to entered HK (tried out the e道). And when I went to 中旅社, they refused to process using my Canadian passport.
In China, there are still many special travel deals only for foreigners. Not to mention, if you need help. It;s worth to make a trip to get the visa.
I now alway use my passport first.
I'll get you the info later today. But she did enter from Canada to Beijing.

I went to Beijing from HK in Dec and all I needed were the HK ID and 回鄉証。
If you are flying direct from Canada to Beijing, I believe you would need your CAN passport with Visa. If you go to HK first, then you don't need the passport.
Doesn't matter where you enter from. Imagine the scenario where someone only with HK citizenship went to Canada for vacation and then need to enter Beijing for business right after. He/she would have to use his/her HK Passport + 回鄉証. So it's okay to enter with 回鄉証 only from Vanc -> Beijing.
Remeber to just use one or the other. Avoid to show both. If you enter w/ 回鄉証 you are entering as a HK Citizen, and if you enter with Canadian Passport you are entering as a Canadian National.
That said, if your life depends on it, I guess at the very minimum the Canadian Embassy will treat you as a Canadian National regardless of your method of entry.
officially, yes you need a hk passport with a 回鄉證 if you go to china directly from canada., not just a 回鄉證 as it's not a international travel document.
but i know people go with just the 回鄉證 with no problem.
as far as i can remember, some people were denied boarding air canada some years ago, was on A1 page news in local chinese newspaper, as the agents (canadian) didn't know what a 回鄉證 was.
i called china eastern last year to confirm whether i needed a visa if i had a 回鄉證, stopping in shanghai , they said no. of course when you land in china , you don't show the immigration officer both the 回鄉證 and the canada passport !!
by the way , hk passport can now go to many countries without a visa, may be more than a canadian passport, (russia , brazil and agentina ) to name just a few.
i guess more countries are FRIENDS to china nowadays!!
remember a canadian complained he didn't get any help from the govt in japan during last year's earthquate ? the chinese embassy there sent buses to evacuate the chinese including hk people in the affected area ?
so if you have hk id it's worth getting a hk passport, and it's 10 years作者: BiscottiGelato 時間: 2012-3-20 18:59
Yes, you are not 'supposed' to have both 回乡证" and Canadian Passport at the same time. Basically, the Chinese gov't does not allow a Chinese National or a HK Citizen to possess two ways to enter China. If they find out, they might confiscate your 回乡证 (Chinese Passport and Citizenship potentially for a Chinese National).
