" NEW " ??

You mean buying "USED", right?

As my understanding ..  most the cars, need to be 6 month or older .. to import to Canada ..

You can ask your buddy to buy it for you, drive for a bit, then sell to you ..

Most cars, the cost different is small ... and for import car (not made in US/Canada) you need to pay 6.2% duty .. etc .. at the end, may be less then 5% or less then $5K diff .. so not worth la...

I think he mentioned NEW. Why spend so much time to buy a USED car from US?

We can buy new car...just need to go thru inspection, documentation...etc...

Price diff is small? Are you sure? I thought it can be 5K to 10K difference? Maybe after all the inspection, modification and documentation...still 3K saving?
But also lots of time and hassle...

Not every model is "admissible" into Canada.

Check this out... http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafe ... n-usa-index-445.htm

wa...thanks a lot for all the info ^+^ I will read them after work ya I heard the inspection and documentation really would used up LOTS time and some $ too and those inspections and documentations might just give you headaches.....a friend asked then my curiosity popped out and wondered hehehe.....

but I believe there's no finance we need to pay the lump sum at once right?

Many manufactures won't allow "NEW" car from US to Canada ...

If you buy a made in US/made in Canada car, the saving is big, since no duty, no speedo etc is needed to change ..

Few yr ago, my friend bought a RX350 from US (demo) back then .. $35K US (was 33K cad) vs $50K plus cad ..  that is big diff, and she drove the car back .... (nice road trip )  and the car is MADE in CANADA ...

When I bought the 535i to my wife last yr, (actually Dec of 2010) was $60K US vs 72K cad + tax and fee .. as the car is German built, with duty and if I SHIP it back ..  would be 67 or 68K .. and US dealers are not suppose to sell a new car to other country ....

Plus US cars have much lower resell in general ..

Again, if you have lots of spare time...  and u will drive it back etc ..  you may save youself some $$ .. but headache la..  need to "Convert"  Mile to Km .. F to C ...

Or if you want some colour that is not popular in Canada (ie: White or red exterior, or Tan interior) that is a different story ...

Nowadays dashboard is all digital, conversion should be piece of cake.

There is an article from CBC not too long ago.  Comparing  price of Canadian made car in US and Canada.

I think you confused. You will need to go down south to buy the NEW car yourself  and drive it back. Not calling US dealer and ship the car back to Canada.

Again .. they are not "SUPPOSE" to sell you ..   I mea import car dealers ..

The difficulty is not the law or conversion, those are all worth it for the price difference.
But the real difficulty or show-stopper is the warranty being void by the manufacturer.

Through the years, more and more manufacturer are trying to void warranty if the cars were brought across the border to protect Canadian dealers.  Last time I checked, over 90% of the brands are not worth the trouble given the warranty issue.  There are some exceptions, but rare.
作者: Catpiano    時間: 2012-10-13 20:14

Um ...  I notice the other way around ..  warranty are they same ...  but the cost diff is smaller and smaller ..

Or should say "cost to own" .....

Only some ultra higher end brand, such as Ferrari .. Lambo ....  bigger different ..  even Porsche ... Bentley ... Aston .. the diff isn't that big ...   then down to BMW ..BENZ ... even quite some different, but either lose the free service .. or need to pay big money for bumpers etc ...

But again ...  it is not all about saving ...  but selection ...and the process as well .. how many times we bought something from US ... seems like a lots of saving .. but at the end ...  only very small different, but then lost the after sale service etc ...

Something I just bought from ebay .. after UPS ( sigh .. ) and higher then usual bidding price ( I want to win! ) .. at the end .. may be no different ..  so ...  I just "comfort" myself ...  that item is sold out in Canada ... lol

Read this:

and this:
http://www.apa.ca/CanadianWarrantyInformationonUSCars.asp

There are more updated info somewhere I read, and more brands deny warranty.
You wouldn't want to tow your car back to Seattle for warranty work, would you?
作者: Catpiano    時間: 2012-10-14 18:41

Yes ar .. so ..  as the link .. most the major brands ..

Kind of odd that most low end brands ..  Chrysler ..Nissan ..Acura .. Kia etc ..  no warranty ... when they are mostly MADE IN CANADA .. ( or US .. ) ...

If live in Vancouver, it is ok to bring the car back to Seattle ..   even I don't live in Vancouver .. I go Seattle ~3 times a yr la..  :O

Anyway, let's help OP to buy a car local la..  ^_^

I think you still misunderstood the point.  For those brands, once you export the car away from US, the US warranty will be void too.  So bring it back to the state for warranty work doesn't help.

That's not the case for all brands.
Either way, it's not worth the trouble unless you got an email from the manufacture (not the dealer) saying that your car will be covered in Canada.
I did an extensive research about before I bought my car this year.

Drive car to Seattle and tow car to Seattle is a big different.  eg. Your car can't start.
