HK is the place for the "smart" kids only.  If your kids are not so smart, it is very hard for them to survive there.  You have to keep "smart" all the time, if not, you will be kicked out right away.

Vancouver seems to be more "laid back" than HK, we could survive comparatively.

You know why HK real eatate and rent just keep going up? It has nothing to do with the economy. It is the HKD depreciates too fast against the RMB. People need a place to hedge their money. Bank gives 0.01% interest. The only place is houses. The poor keeps falling more and more behind and feel hopeless. So they decide to come to Vancouver where you earn HKD$80 per hour just by washing dishes, Black market Iphone 5 is cheaper here, Safeway and The Bay always hire you until 60 years old, CAD$3.5 餐蛋麵 in food court, $2.99 8GB USB at NCIX when its on sale, etc.... haha.

Both cities Vancouver and Hong Kong are selling the real estate dream provided by the Lee Ka Shing's Concord Pacific. Certainly these real estate moguls lack more ethics than a typical drug dealer. But why does so many in the population fall for that trap?

Define smart, is the relentlessness to chase wealth and recognition from society considered smart?  Because of Hong Kong's free market economy, the population seem to use money as the official religion. This economic freedom is undermined by the political sanctions that infringes the rights of the citizens, so the citizens are obligated to use wealth accumulation as a measure of success. If you want to raise kids to become opportunistic, Hong Kong is the place to be.

I would say not just smart, but you do require the will to work extra long hours, good people skills, and the good money making business is relatively isolated.

There are far too many extremely low pay job in HK which will never get you anywhere.  You do the same here in Vancouver, you can still retire comfortably.

Hong Kong's unemployment rate and taxation rate remain lower than that of Canada and the US. It looks like Hong Kong will be one of few places that will remain solvent in the coming few years, as HK government has no net debt.

Just look at Greece, Spain, Japan and the US. They are facing rising national debt. Sooner or later they will go bankrupt, therefore their governments will have to make big cuts in their spending, which will degrade their welfare, health care and education programs etc.

The difference between Vancouver and Hong Kong is the sense of community. Throughout my volunteer experiences I feel the community is more accommodating to the individual in Vancouver, benefits for both the community and self. But in Hong Kong, you either don't do free work without money or they expect you to donate your soul when providing volunteering labour.

For example, if you are a youth protestor in HK and is not Long Hair, you are considered naive and sometimes innocent. Elders would laugh at you, but in Western society people seem to be more tolerant of a dissident's opinion. This is the sense of community I refer to.  Society in HK have huge expectation of the individual, fame and wealth is deified by the tabloid media.

let's say USA, i have a caucasian friend who works in the same field,  married a chinese wife.  he got  job offer for working in austin, texas.  he is making almost double what he made in vancouver, but his wife doesn't like the ethnicity distribution in that area, eventually they want to move to west, like LA, or back to vancouver.  i was tempted to apply for the salary increase as he was looking to expand his team, as i'm bounded to vancouver.   the company is willing to pay for the airfare + accommodation for interviews, and apply h1b(or whatever visa it is…) eventually a green card.

for spain……….my coworker, who is originally from the uk, studied in sfu got her mba,  got laid off by the company, she was in the marketing team.  she couldn't find job in vancouver.  then she moved to spain to try out because she travelled there before and liked it…surprisingly, she has been getting free lance job one after another, she doesn't speak spanish….maybe she has an edge of what she does comparing to the local…since spain unemployment rate has been raising since 07

myself, couldn't find job after graduated, it was after the tech bubble.  all company in vancouver required 2 years plus working experience.  i moved to hk, spent a few months looking for job..fruitless.   then went to dongguan, worked as a merchandiser, which i had no experience, not paid, but accommodation provided…at least that was a starting point, then later i got a job in tech related position, the salary was same as local, not most people would think a foreigner should be getting…it's okay…   then i was able to get job in hk..eventually back here.

back to your question:
for job availability/cost of living/etc..., internet is a great resource, for suitability, you won't know until you are actually there.
my coworkers in china were very friendly, they were all from different part of china, they are more passionate than i anticipated.  but i didn't feel the city is safe, as i've witnessed robbery, fighting and etc… if i were to try a place that i've never been to before, i would consider emerging countries, just to explore what is out there, at least they seem to have opening that matches my skill set

for those who have worked in places other than hk/canada, feel free to comment
