I was wondering what the standard for yan ching nowadays?

It really depends, the bottom line is to give the "cost" for dinner + "wine water costs" in dinner la

If your friend is close to you, you can pay more
If you know both of them work really hard (financially) to get to this stage, by all means pay decent

but let's say if both of them are doing well and they have rich parents, a special gift instead of "yun ching" is still acceptable.

For casual friend ..

If chinese resturant ..  ~ $80 (or say $150 for 2) ..  Hotel ..~ $100

Of course, depends which resturant you go .. but just general .. Hotel is 30-50% more expensive in cost .. so pay more la ..

the amount i give depends on how close i am with the person, doesn't matter what class of the restaurant is.  if it's my close friend but at a cheap restaurant, i still give at least $100.  on the other hand, if it's just a hi-bye friend but still invite me to the hotel banquet, 擺到明搵我充撐場面啦, 我唔叫佢俾返 D 臨記費佢都已經偷笑。so, i'd only give $60. (used to be $50 but after inflation, now it's $60)

In this case... for ppl who want to "use me to fill the table", I won't even go.. but still give like a gift card to him/her.
