I know it sounds crazy since I just found this new job but lately, I've been asking myself if this is the job for me??

It's a global company and the pay is better than the previous one.
Everything seems like a heaven, less work load, good office hours and people are relax here.... but .... I still have the uncertainly.

Ever since I work here, I made so much mistakes and I want to snap myself so bad...   I'm responsible but ...that's because ---

1) I never been into this industry

2) the person who "Train" me is an old gentleman that doesn't have any accounting sense and only "do what people told him to do". So if I have any question regarding any abbreviation in the industry or accounting system. His answer is always "Don't ask me why, it is the way it is.."

3) The way he told me to do "AR", everything are so unorganized and hand written...so I cannot illuminated the mistakes ... since it's hand written on papers and so much uncertain.

4) The DOS system that I'm working on. May  be I'm too spoiled in the past by using ACCPAC and "present technology". I'm too used to able to tell the mistakes I made or any error I make on spot but.... now, I have to manually key in any cheque I received and key in any entries without seeing the mistakes I make or typo I make until ...at the very end , I run the AR report.....then I know where the mistakes came from.

Worst of all, I'm always uncertain can I change a mistake right the way since the "trainer" always give me a feeling that once I key in something. The system cannot reflect the error in our Vancouver office. I always worry that once I input something. It is automatically posted onto the system since only the head office accounting people have authority to change anything.

(then, I found out later on, it's not always the case)

I become more uncertain last Friday after some "miscommunication" with the "trainer" and I made a minor mistake  (after I think about it ) but the trainer become very frustrated and I corrected it later on.........

There were one time I was doing a release on the DOS system and I think I input something wrong on the system due to some confusion from him. For example, the total $ amount does not match the cheque number. Chq #601, supposed to be $320 but I input as $800 since the customer submit two cheques to cover one single invoice and the DOS system shown something confuse me...and I knew I have to change it right the way or it will affect the bank rec. but ....

but ............ the "trainer" (who is 62 now) told me he dun think it's a big fuss ...as long as the $ amount match up the total amount of the invoice~~~~~~~~~~~~ I mean, this is not something that an accounting people dare to say ..................

Sometimes it's hard to make a comment on a job when you just started not too long ago.  Give yourself 3 months to see if you really learn a lot from it.

However, if you hate it so much and you want to find something that's more challenging, then go look for another one.  You are still young, I don't think the old fashion way of doing accounting would help you much for your next job, just that you can may be understand the accounting principle a bit more.
作者: utopia    時間: 2008-4-28 09:38

I'm not saying I'm very professional and good in accounting but at least I have some solid professional accounting experience.

If ... at the beginning, they stated it clear it is only for "DATA ENTRY"... I honestly, won't take this job but since they hired me as "AP/AR"... and willing to train me as the key user of SAP system...that's why I took the job.... and...

it has been almost one month.... I still have not much to do everyday....instead of sitting  in front of the computer and work 3 hours .........daily..

Here is a question keep asking myself, should I keep this job after the SAP training at end of May or should I quit after the training?

On one hand, I can slow down my daily workload and focus on my study while getting paid at a not bad income where there is Zero challenges at work.

Or I can quit this job, and consider go back to the agent and try to find an junior accountant job..... There were two jobs offering me a junior accountant job and willing to promote me to be the senior accountant/account manager within two years time. I didn't take it because I thought I"m not ready for it... but after working here, I realize my accounting skill is not as bad as I thought......

Anyways, just want to let it out my stress here... you guys can ignore me..................

well you made your choice...better face it and live with it

will this short employment term have a negative impact to your resume?.....its possible for HR of a company to think "hmm...why do you have such a short term for this job?..if i hire you will you quit in a few months just like your last job?"...sure you can give explanations...but to some people...the more convincing you do...the more doubts will arise

Thanks 華美子,

I don't hate it so much but it just frustrated me ....
I start to doubt myself, is it my capability? or am I so bad that I can't adapt into the stone aged accounting system here??

Well, that's what I thought too... I'm thinking may be I should giving myself 3-6 months to see how I fit in here... if at the end, I really earn nothing from it other than the training of SAP. May be I should change to something else... because...... I feel bad ......cuz' I know I can do a lot more than just data entry.... I would say I did almsot 80% of the full accounting cycle from my previous job........

Celeron,

ai... that's why I try to convince myself... perhaps, I should take this job as a "part-time" basis job and strongly focus on my study after my training in Montreal lor.

changing job too quickly will seriously mess up your resume.

It sounds like you like the company/compensation but don't like the accounting system.

It takes time to get used to a new system.  I think the number of mistake you make will drop after you get used to it.  I don't think it's a big deal.  If other coworkers are fine and your boss is OK, then I wouldn't make a move so fast.

Once you get used to an easy job, it might take you longer time to get back to competitve job evironment.  My last job was super easy.  Basically my work schedule was like this:

Arriving in the office -> Playing games -> Lunch -> Going home.

That's what we did all day.  When I first came to my current job, I found my programming skill was not as sharp as before and it took my awhile to get back and be familiar to all th coding again.

I regretted that I wasted my 2 years there (my first 2 years was okay, I did learn stuff there).

I am just telling you my experience.  However, I do suggest you to keep this job for awhile because you can use the time to focus on study and learn to get familiar with SAP.  Learn to deal with different people even with people with less accounting knowledge.

Myversa,

You hit the main point of my complaint.
I worry that I will get used to the easy environment here too much and I will become less productive once I change into a more competitive environment.

I realize that people here always complain about technology problem; including outlook... and I just sit there quietly and figure it out myself..since I"m used to a super busy environment that everything has to be DIY...

I can see an opportunity to show your ability in your current job though.

Sounds like your trainner is very old fashion and not very well organized. So, after you finish your training, if you can straighten up, mordenize and computerize all his work, it will look very good on you.

I agree with this and I also see this as a good opportunity.  Esp. you mentioned this company is fairly big (global?), it may be a good chance to establish sth here.  (it is uasually hard to find opportunity to establish some ground in big company neh).

but just becareful that don't be 功高蓋主.  we can discuss this further if you want to know how to avoid it.
作者: Alcoholic    時間: 2008-4-28 17:42

if that old man is like that, just listen to him when he teaches to avoid nagging. and once everything is settled, you'll have a chance to improvise a new system or way of doing things. that way, you can learn, contribute & prove yourself to the old men that things are done differently now. besides, they hired you to get things modernized jeh.

It is actually very lucky for you that you can start you job when everything is in a mess. It's easier for people to see the difference after you straighten everything up. However, if the previous person does everything perfectly, there's nothing special when you can do as good as that person. At the same time, it's hard to do better to show yourself!

If you do feel ultimately frustrated/ people don't like you... start looking for another job.. but otherwise just stick with it for a while

I totally feel for you cuz I am in my new job for almost 3 months.  In my first 2 month I always feel whatever I did was just wrong. PLAIN wrong.  But now I just started realize something:

When you watch DIFFERENT people doing the same thing it can be DIFFERENT and the outcome CAN BE DIFFERENT TOO.  So the more ppl you ask the more advantage you get.  Sometimes it's just different ppl get different standard.

Secondly, would you rather people tell you that you did wrong when you're new/ they tell you after you work there for years sin?  It might sound retarded but just ask WHENEVER you are confused.  ASK more than 1 person if possible.

Proper manner when someone tries to correct you
1. I'm sorry
2. It's my fault
3. How can I correct it?
作者: utopia    時間: 2008-4-29 09:06

Well, I'm not the type of person which will put somebody down and totally disrespect my so called "trainer".

It just he is in the wrong field. Not saying he is not accurate but he is accurate because he has been doing the exact same step and same things daily in the past 7 years.

He is very knowledgeable in this industry but I can't expect someone who used to sell hot dog and coffee by the dock will know accounting principle and concept, right?

Sazabi,

This company is large I guess? I'm not sure since I just started less than one month but due to the industry nature, they have offices in major cities around the world and on all continents (almost). So it's relatively large.

This company is not in a mess, it was a mess but they hired some HR professional totally re-shape the discipline and company value about 6 months ago so everything here is very well constructed already except they are using stone aged knowledge.

Part of the reason why the accounting paperwork is not well organized is they don't have anybody here in the Vancouver office responsible in accounting. They only have so called accounting clerk to do the work but these accounting clerk do not have strong accounting knowledge. They are just doing the surface work, so they don't have the sense of how the internal cycle work. Most of the time, they  just pray for the "finance office" will be "ok" with their work without any adjustment. They don't understand why these people in finance are very picky and strict on certain format and why they have to keep a copy on every single transaction. ....

The only opportunity I can see in this office is, they are slowly releasing (that's what I've been told in the interview) the AP works to the remote  offices which mean the head office will no longer solely responsible for all AP/AR transactions. Hopefully, as I move on with my own education and plus solid experience. I don't have to stuck doing "data entry" la....

But not sure will that happen ........ as some of you mentioned too, it's hard to gain ground in large company

sounds like a hard situation to be in ..

you'll want to assess what's the better way of doing things than status quo (maybe communicate w/ finance dept more for suggestions?), whether you are capable to do it, and whether you want to continue in this job much longer (long term prospect considering lack of growth in vancouver office)

sounds like u haven't worked so long at this company, so it's possible to forgive a short stint as long as you can acceptably communicate w/ future employers why you chose not to stay (or just omit it from your resume altogether since it's too short?)

DOS-like systems have a lot more limitations than modern accounting systems .. and is much less flexible.  so, good luck w/ this problem!
