Does anyone apply for Nexus, is there any disadvantage? I heard it is only CAD50 for 5 yrs.

I have Nexus. With the dollar this low, getting Nexus maybe a good idea if you travel to US frequently. However Nexus has lots of rules, some are listed below.

- Only the Nexus holder can use Nexus lanes
- Nexus holder cannot drop off passengers before custom (this is enforced a little bit more lately)
- You need to carry the "declaration form" and fill it every time you come back to Canada

Other than that, the application process can take anywhere from 4-5 months. I applied in Nov, and I had my interview at airport in March. My schedule appointment was at 2:45pm, and the US custom didn't see me until 5pm.

I have had my Nexus for only 4+ years la.  It's worthy as long as you travel to US often enough.  There is quite some restriction that you should be aware..!  But if you think about it, you can always head toward the US with Nexus, then come back normal if you have over $50 purchased

What kind of Question they asked in the interview?

I kinda 1/2 filled in the online application form... but too many questions, so i gave up.

Now that the line up is getter so long now, i am thinking of filling in the rest of the form once again

They asked me:

- What do you do for living?
- What purposes do you go?
- Any convictions with customs?
- Which countries vistied?

If I use NEXUS, What happen if I spend over $50 on the day trip and wrote down on the  "declaration form"?

B'cas sometimes, the custom let go even we spend more than the limit...

The declaration form are collected and sent to Nigara Falls (Ont) for processing, that means no matter how much, you get taxed for the amount you declared.

If you buy from US, try your luck to line up. You might be home free.

So if I'm the only one who have Nexus but I carry passengers in my car, is that not allowed?  Everyone in the car must have Nexus also?

I had Nexus before But I never renew it when it expired few years ago. You can ONLY carry passengers who have Nexus also. And when you apply, you can only include family members on the application.
作者: pkphilip    時間: 2008-5-11 14:18

All pessengers in the car must have Nexus, otherwise you must go through regular lanes.

more question...

If I include family members in my application, they all need to attend the interview and how much more for the application fee?

Sorry for bumping an old thread...probably shutterbug's question has been answered long time ago... I just want to add my experience to it.

I did the application online. Paid $150 (me + my wife and my 5 month old infant) and had the interviewed scheduled today at Vancouver center (just 2 blocks north of Stadium skytrain station).

We did the interview as a family of 3. We headed straight to the Nexus counter...2 US officers were working...were asked to hand over every pieces of documents (passport, citizenship cert, etc.) over. Got asked the typical questions (any violation with laws, customs, doing drugs, etc.)....just answered them truthfully and you'll be fine. I learned not to crack any jokes and have my poker face. They have your fingers scanned then you are asked to wait for the CAD officers to call your name. It was not a long interview (we did the US part in about 45 min) but since the counter is high and they have no chairs for you so it was tiring (I also carry my bb with the Baby Bjorn).

We waited 1/2 hr before the CAD officers called us....and we have a chair to sit down! Wow! There weren't many questions compare to the US side but they did ask why we apply for Nexus....we told them it is for pleasure (shopping).....they won't give it to you if you give them any hint of doing business there. The officer went thru the nexus lane hours...had us to sign a form declaring we won't violate the rules (or have the card taken away)....we got the declaration cards and were out the door....spent about 2 hrs altogether. We did not get our iris scanned as I had to go...but can always do it at the airport or any nexus center...

One thing I found out was if you have another passport (BNO, SAR passport, or any other passport) you want to make sure you include that in your application (online or paper). I didn't enter my SAR passport info online and the guy gave me a lecture on it. Having another passport won't hurt your chances to get a nexus card but not declaring your other passport may hurt you in the long run.

We were told the card will come in 5-10 business days....can't wait to get that in the mail and have this card as an optional travel doc (esp. on flights).

Hope my experiences help those thinking about getting a nexus.

why did you have to pay for your infant?  we applied for NEXUS too with our 2 year old daughter and we only paid $100 and they issued 3 nexus for me, my hubby, and my daughter.  I understand children are free.

I have and enjoy it very much! It's very convenient.
作者: myversa    時間: 2009-12-17 13:26

so it still takes 4-5 months to apply?

actually it was faster than i thought. about 2 months?
After application is accepted then you can schedule interview. I schedule the interview at the border office since it's faster. (need to wait longer if I want to interview @ downtown or airport...also..parking is free @ border).
So I just park my car in the duty shop (the truck crossing border), and the staff there show us the way and we just walk to the office.
The interview is pretty easy. Both Canadian and US side custom are pretty nice. Just general questions of why you want to apply, and tell us about the "rules" of using it.
Just that if you want to use Nexus Air, need to go back to Airport (any time later) to get your iris scanned.
作者: 布小熊    時間: 2009-12-17 14:27

I had it a long while ago and I didn't re-apply after it expired.

Don't you feel you have to give a lot of personal information to them?

Interesting....my other friend has the same concern.... but to me, I don't think I am giving out a lot of info....e.g. driver license, passport #, credit card info. Name, address etc.
Even you don't give to custom....you think they can't dig it out???
作者: qqmaro    時間: 2009-12-21 09:37

Thank you fibbi, that is very useful.

I just wonder how much will they charge for the tax? If I claim the items I bought at states?
作者: B2L2    時間: 2013-1-23 14:29

Tax is the same as HST (PST+GST later this year) and for items subject for duty, they could collect them too.
作者: low_B    時間: 2013-1-23 17:45

We claimed $500, they charge me $102....

different item different rate...If it's clothing and jewellery then rate is high.

$500 for 1 person?
I think we brought in $400 (2 people) and didn't charge tax...
Never tried more than $400...
作者: low_B    時間: 2013-1-23 20:41

We pick up the stuffs from point Roberts and use nexus lane, is not clothing or garment stuffs ah....
作者: B2L2    時間: 2013-1-23 21:07

20% (12% tax + 7-8% duty) is pretty common for non-US made items.

If you are importing non-US made clothing items, duty itself is close to 18%.

hehe, it's all sold out.  You have to pay around $450, although it is only $300 in Google Store. But it's been out of stock forever.  So people charge a arm/leg more over the store price.

I heard Nexus is not popular in HK.
作者: Nox    時間: 2013-1-26 09:19

To most retailers in HK there are only 3 phones in the market.
iPhone, Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note II

On most forums in HK, if you talk about anything outside of these 3 phones, you're gonna get answers like "WTF, there are only 3 phones in this world!  That thing you talk about isn't a phone!  It's crap!|

LOL  Another example of how narrow minded majority of the people is in HK thanks to the mainlanders.

I love all my Nexus.

All without any junk.
