Ryan Reynolds hit by a car in Vancouver, won’t talk to CBC about it unless they bring Beachcombers
VANCOUVER — Ryan Reynolds might be a big city New York actor now, but the 38-year-old showed his West Coast cred Sunday when he issued a demand to restore The Beachcombers to the airwaves.

This was after an incident in the parking garage of his downtown hotel. Reynolds, who is in his Vancouver hometown to shoot the superhero film Deadpool, was reportedly hurt in an confrontation with a photographer.
Asked by CBC Vancouver how he was doing, the actor replied by social media message,“Put Beachcombers back on the air and I’ll call.”
“I knew I liked this guy,” said Vancouver-based actor Jackson Davies, who played RCMP Constable John Constable on the long-running series.

“I’ve always thought that Ryan Reynolds was one of the brightest actors in Canada and the world, and he’s stepped up once more.”Related

On the air in 1972-90, The Beachcombers had the seemingly dull premise of following the lives of West Coast log salvagers.
But the show soon rivalled Hockey Night in Canada for ratings and was one of the few Canadian TV creations to become a hit on foreign airwaves, earning rebroadcast in 50 countries.

And for a province yet to be flooded by Hollywood film shoots, it provided training for a generation of B.C. directors, producers and crew.
“Basically, it was the University of Beachcombers,” said Davies, who also co-authored a book, Bruno and the Beach, on the show.
For young Vancouverites like Reynolds (12 when the show was cancelled), it was also one of the few places they could see their home province portrayed on TV.
Today, only one channel broadcasts reruns of The Beachcombers. Sixty of the 387 episodes play on APTN, which puts the show on its daytime schedule because of its numerous aboriginal characters.
The other 327 shows have been locked away in CBC’s archives for more than 15 years — which might explain Reynolds’ Sunday tweet.
“There’s quite a few people that ask why they can’t get a box set — it’s in high demand,” said a staffer at Molly’s Reach, the Gibsons, B.C.-based café that figured heavily in the series and is now a pilgrimage site for Beachcombers fans.
“There’s all kinds of red tape involved — there’s so many rights owned by different writers and this and that,” she added.
Speaking to the National Post on Monday, Davies said he is involved in an effort that would get the long-hidden shows back into the public eye, although he could provide no concrete details.
A revival of the show was attempted in 2002, but never caught on. Bruno Gerussi, who attained stardom as lead character Nick Adonidas, died in Vancouver 20 years ago from a heart attack. Show co-creator Marc Strange died in 2012 from cancer.

The alleged hit and run against Reynolds occurred in the parking garage of the Shangri-La hotel. A paparazzo approached the actor, got into a confrontation, and “as the photographer fled the parking lot, he struck (Reynolds) with his car,” Vancouver Police spokesman Const. Brian Montague said Monday.
Police have recommended a 52-year-old photographer from Richmond, B.C., be given the rare charge of intimidation for the incident.
Reynolds suffered “a sore knee” and “a sore back.”
Reynolds’ apparent Beachcombers fandom is not the only distinctly Canadian charecteristic of the Kitsilano Secondary School alumnus. He once dated fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette, he married actress Scarlett Johansson at a remote Vancouver Island resort and, like any good Canuck, has a Mountie for a brother.
