The Highways Department has said the trees were cut as the cracks on the stone wall were widening and the trees posed a serious risk to public safety.
But University of Hong Kong Professor Jim Chi-yung said a report by geotechnical specialists had said the cracks were normal. He said such experts should have been brought in to determine whether the four trees needed to be chopped down.
He again called on the government to explain the decision to cut the four banyan trees on safety grounds.
"In the future, if you have such a big difference in opinion, how would the government tackle [it]? I think these are the questions that most people would want to ask," Jim said.
