Officials in Poland have cast doubt on claims that there is a long-lost Nazi train hidden in the country loaded with huge amounts of gold.

Geologists said they have found no traces of anything at a site allegedly hiding a World War Two train.

Experts from the University of Science and Technology in Krakow examined the site in Walbrzych, southwestern Poland, last month using magnetic and gravitation equipment.

But the head of the team, Janusz Madej, told a news conference: "According to our examination, there might be a tunnel there but there is no train there."

Earlier this year, explorers Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter told the authorities in Walbrzych that they had located an armoured Nazi train hidden in a secret tunnel and a team of experts were brought in to assess the claims.

Sky News correspondent Ian Woods watched the proceedings. He said: "The news conference had two sets of experts there - one who have always believed there was a train hidden underneath the mountains and they have tried to prove it.

"Other independent experts (were brought in) in to look at it to carry out their own tests ... to see if the anomalies they were coming across could actually lead to something. And they've basically come to different conclusions.

"So now the big question is: Is it worth digging up the mountain? And that's up to the mayor of Walbrzych.

"The story was that because the Russians were closing in from the East and the Allies were closing in from the West, the Nazis panicked and tried to hide what loot that they had plundered over the preceding years and that's why the story or the legend built up.

"Even if they did uncover a train, they might not find any evidence that there was something on board there."
