Thomas and his wife is nice. In fact, I was very tired that day but his wife "cheer me up" the whole day and also try to provide more shade to me to block the sun (the sun was really strong that day).
Regarding the pictures, overall I'm satisfied, so as my friends.

I think $2570 is a bit pricey but the big chunk of $ should go to the album. If you don't need the album the price should be in the $1xxx range.

The price above is from 巴黎春天...I already rent their gowns there.. coz their gowns sooo NICE.
I also went to 百合仙子﹐their price include album (only 40 pic) = 2500, also 2 photographers (12-15hrs) ..but when i look at their sample.. in my opinion, not too professional... and the album material.. is just so so.... they called us back later saying that they can reduce it to 2280 ....  i also went to HN Wedding.. their price is HIGH (starting 3200).. and it was FULL already on my wedding day.. any other suggestions?

$1600 could be already expensive; while $2570 could be cheap. Cuz price range is as wide as just a few hundreds to a few thousands close to 10 thousands, from low experienced freelancers to high reputed professionals, all depends on what quality and what products you expect. But to have a fair say, around $2500-$3000 is quite reasonable to expect for a fairly good quality service and products.

10 weeks that long?!?! I don't know others but my photographer needs only 4-5 weeks (it's on contract) to edit photos in details. I think although your photographer took 2x longer than usual maybe he can do 2x nicer?! Too bad you should ask him about the time frame before deciding to go with him, but if he can do a wonderful editing job, you should let him have sufficient time to work on them. Good luck!

I don't knon Thomas in person, but I wouldn't be surprise if it takes more than 8 weeks before they photos are ready, since a lot of time can be spent to create well prepare digital images from the origianl raw formats.

To give you an idea, I helped one of my good friend to re-edit over hundreds of wedding photos which was taken in HK, because the editing works was so poor.  (Colors are off, and dark, etc..)  So, personally, I wouldn't trust photographer who have short turn around time ...!

I had Thomas as my wedding photographer as well. Really good attitude. My wedding day was SUPER hot and I was really tired. If Thomas and his wife weren't that cheerful and helpful I think all my pictures I will have no smile. Pictures are good. I have seen my friends pictures (also with him) and they are better than mine some how. But still, I will recommend him because I think attitude counts a great deal and it became part of the good memory.

He was our photographer and he was awesome...you know its not just how well they take pictures but also how willing they are to do things you request them to do..some of the photographers I have seen - they have their own mindset and will force the bride/groom to do the same things over and over again...so stupid...Derek is super nice though and he covers full day.

Well .. put it this way, everything in Canada .. when labor related .. is EXPENSIVE ..

Wedding photograper in Van ( on wedding day ) is quite cheap compare to other city in Canada already. (since more competition?)

I know few people here, they hire photographers from Vancouver, even with extra air ticket/hotel fee, still cost LESS then local ....

Put it this way, work in fastfood in HK ..  ~ $3-4 cad/hr  vs $10-12cad/hr here .... and wedding photographer in HK ..  ~ $12k - 15K ( full day, 2 or 3 photographers)

It is true, much cheaper there .. but consider the scale ..  ~ 50% more in Canada isn't un reasonable.

For me, I prefer experienced photographer with film, (or film + digital) then "NEW" digital photographer who loves to PS ...  If I prefer heavy PS photo, I can ask my teenage brother to take the pic, and send to CHINA for PS ..  low cost, and GREAT PS skill/effect as well..  ^_^

I used Thomas So but I have to say I am not very impressed so far.  He talks well but he doesn't "action".  My photos will take 8-10 weeks to develop and I asked if I can have one good picture now so I can make my thank you card but he said keep in touch.  My parents had to leave for Hong Kong a few days after and I asked if I can have a few pics so I can develop a few for my parents to take back, but instead, he sent me 10 previews pics.  So far, not impressed.
He asked me to pay the full balance without giving us the picture and we said no.  So far we paid 75% of the cost and am waiting for the pics to give him the rest.
Don't get fooled by his "sweet talk". it's better to get someone who provides customer service and quality pictures, not someone just good at talking and selling.

lizzie 發表於 2009-6-11 21:34

Very true, just as true as many other industries.
A simple logic, a "photographer" who has good chatting and selling technique doesn't necessary mean he/she can take nice pictures; on the other hand, a "photographer" who can shoot well but might be handicapped in customer communication skills. So of course, a "photographer" as well as a "businessman" who has all the above essentials wouldn't charge cheap.

Actually, for most photographers, you have pay 100% by the day of your wedding.  They won't let you withhold some until you get the pictures so that's pretty normal.

We wanted to use Thomas but he was already booked for our wedding day.  He's a really good deal compared to other ones out there and I've seen his work for a whole wedding.  Honestly, don't think Hee is all that great, even though I've seen people mention it before.

Thomas So is the classic Hong Kong style, you pose for every photo, rather than capture the moment.  Eg, stop and pose for every person you served tea, pretend to hold the cup, pretend to give gift/red pocket then smile.  Everything is posed to get the effect.  Whereas the newer style is the photo journalism type, "capture the moment", so it depends on what you are looking for.

As for my wedding photos from Thomas So, I had my wedding in May and I have not heard from him to this date.  Still waiting for my pictures.

Thanks for the update! I was wondering too.
I personally don't like the HK style pose and shot photos. U can get those shots with helps from relatives and friends.
I am a big fan of photo journalism. photo is to capture the moment and memories.

He said 8-10 weeks but when I emailed him, he "fool hin" me.  I am glad I didn't pay for the full 100% yet and still has a balance to pay when I collect my photos.  My friend had to wait 1 year before she got her wedding photos and she paid her photographer 100% before the wedding.  I learned from her not to do that.

Thomas So did have 2 photographers, but that other guy is a junior and he was just standing there like a piece of lumber.  He wasn't quite sure what to do at most times.  It was mostly Thomas So who took the pictures, but again "posed" pictures.  I haven't seen my pictures yet, may be I could be impressed, so let's wait and see.

As daimo said thomas is popular due to his price "same as bailey", I think then it makes sense he gave you a lumber junior (lol I like this one) and long wait processing time for your photos. I hope he is taking the time to finely edit your pictures then it's worth to wait, good luck lizzie!

BTW I never heard of Thomas neither.....

I think 2-3 months turn around time is reasonable. The cauasian photographers I heard about (from forum) also about the same time frame.
I had Thomas as my wedding photographer before and at that time he and his wife are working together. His wife is very detail oriented. Maybe now the new guy is not as good...
