Seems like Garmin is a little more expensive than Tom Tom
What's the difference besides one offer Car adapter and one doesn't

Garmin is probably the most reliable one I've used so far. I also have a TomTom.

Dell and Futureshop has them on sale during their Days of Deals sale. You better off buying one with Text to Speech.

Check Costco too, the Garmin they carries might be on sale from time to time (not sure which model).
I doubt there would be any built-in Chinese dictation you can find here. But you can check online, see if there is any free (or pay) download la.

Chech it out in BB, last Christmas I saw some have Chinese dictation . Around $150.
Many Mandarine speaking looking for it. It was a Garmin or Tom Tom, I forgot.

I have a question, Garmin 255 is $229.99 at FS. How does it compare to the Garmin 260?
The 260 is currently $279.99 at costco.ca but I think they will have a coupon coming up last week of March at $100 off this model.
It's is worth to spend extra $50 for a newer model GPS?

For Garmin and TomTom, you can download Chinese voices into the device. My TomTom and Garmin on my phone can do Chinese.

I am not concern about Chinese on the GSP. My sister doesn't really speak Chinese... She translate that into English in her head anyway.

I run Tomtom GPS on my Windows Mobile phone. I downloaded Cantonese voice so it gives instructions in Cantonese.

Second hand GPS is reliable mah?...
does it break down after certain years?

main user is not going to need special functions...
but need clear text-to-voice (can adjust volume)
and a map that's able to update
car AC adapter ^^

everything else. mm dun matter

我用過一個百零蚊o既tom tom,收得好差,去到LA 直頭係錯哂..完全靠害
亦都試過Garmin Nuvi 5000 GPS Portable Navigation System (BEST BUT ($549.95), o係vancouver 一路去到Lynnwood 都ok,但係入到downtown seattle 都係死亡..唔好話叫佢帶你返屋企,佢連自己o係邊都搵唔到.
普遍去到多高樓大廈o既地方或者落雨天個GPS 都收得唔好..
建議你買o黎試o下,唔o岩就refund o左佢...

Actually it's a common problem for GPS that they don't work properly around 高樓大廈.
I was STUCK in downtown NYC at night with the stupid GPS. I drove around and around and all those taxi drivers keep honking... It took me > 1 hr to find my way back to the hwy out of NYC.

I was hungry, tired and scared. It was a true nightmare.....

gps 只係附助性質.最好睇一睇map 先好用佢...
去到收唔到signal o既地方,你亂咁行,佢再帶返你返原路,去返收唔到signal o既地方,跟住自己又亂行...

that prob happened. I didn't plan to drive to NYC. I was going take the train and I had no driving map. Only map I had was those from BCAA tour booklet.
Anyway, that's the end of driving in NYC. The next day I took the train and it was much easier.

So which Garmin Model is the best for the following use:

- local BC or to AB
- USA - Seattle / LA / San Diego (shopping use)
- fast to retrieve map and instruction

Not necessary Chinese.. English is ok.. (able to upgrade the map every / twice a yr)

It is a lot cheaper for GPS. I have a Nuvi 360 for a couple years. So far so good. I used it for West Coast. I don't have experience as other LYKs have in the cities. Some part of the map may be outdated, but it you can manage to get in and out without too much a problem. I think 360 is outdated, you can get 760, 780 instead.

You can get the latest map by paying or hacking. GPS doesn't really get outdated really, they are simply a piece of hardware. Maybe when the newest maps are bigger, it will take longer for it to load.

Outdated, I meant Garmin discontinue the model.

Usually, consumer electronics maker continuously putting out new models by updating the last generation model's appearance (cosmetics change) and change a little on the hardware, features combinations and circuit designs.

I think Garmin 250WC is a canadian version of 250W. The one thing I don't like about this is missing the text to speech.

text-to-speech is not that good. One garmin model I tried said "Turn Lift" instead of "Turn Left". The real human recorded voice is better IMO.

I like the type with internal free space which Nuvi 350, 360, 370 carries it..but I'm not even sure if the internal storage is useful or not.. ><

i got a garmin 350 and just updated the framework for its website, which i can have cantonese voice. test it, pretty clear. not sure does it work for all garmin, but you can check with them before you buy it

It's still in stock as of today. I think I will prob order. I am not sure if you need to be a costco member to purchase. And you have to ship it somewhere, not pick up.

I've ordered one. Well, costco has the best return policy. In case anything goes wrong, I can return it. (e.g. if my sister hates it)
