I almost puked because I tried tnt uni after coming back from Hokkaido earlier this year.

I heard the same comment like me before but I didn't believe & thought those people were so 折墮 until I tasted the fresh uni in Hokkaido. Now I wonder if the tnt uni is really consumable?!?!?!?!

are you serious? T & T is just an average supermarket, why would they sell high end product and what makes you think ppl will spend a lot of $$ there? ppl go to T & T to SAVE $ not SPEND $.......if you want good uni, I think you should go to sashimi specialty store rather than T & T.....

In case you don't know, many high class customers in Hong Kong still eat at places like 茶餐廳 and 大牌擋. The high class people shop everywhere from high class to low class places. They don't need to show off. Its only the low class people that want to pretend to be high class.
作者: Ultraman    時間: 2009-3-21 02:38

My point was, TnT didn't aim at high class people, not if they changed to high class supermarket and then no high class people will go.
And of course, high class people will go to 茶餐廳 and 大牌擋 for their particular styles, but providing that they serve reasonably good food. While you commented TnT's uni is gross and tasteless, is there a reason high class people will go buy it?

Uni = 海膽
The one being sold in TnT is packaged in a plastic container. Of course people won't/shouldn't expect 5 star quality for just paying around $14 for a pack, but $14 shouldn't be tasteless or stinky like that.
作者: tiffiant    時間: 2009-3-21 14:36

but if buying it, would you choose those ones in plastic bags or containers?

i dont' think there is a definition for uni's fresshness

Of course, real fresh represents those are still "alive" and "swimming" in the water (or just up from the water). Then fresh level decreases depends on the way they treat/store/pack them. And another factor is, depends on where the "region" they're from.
Many people comment, even the reasonably fresh ones in Vancouver is never as tasty as the average ones in Japan!
作者: tiffiant    時間: 2009-3-21 15:37

its really depends on how the people pack, treat them

and i see superstore, the UNI all stack togather..
and the water is not that fresh.... probably have to buy Those UNI in special places
作者: salad_bread    時間: 2009-3-21 16:00

there is quite a few UNI factories in Vancouver, you can find it out.
The best UNI is GREEN UNI, size is smaller (with shell) than that one you can see in japanese restuarant but it is really tasty

Life lesson #102: We should always strive to learn from our past experiences, and try our very best not to make the same mistake twice. We can use our own discernment to estimate how good or bad a place (e.g. restaurant, supermarket etc.) is. Based on our estimate, we adjust our expectations accordingly. For example, if I order a "hot sizzling steak dinner" at a HK style *char* restaurant, I won't expect it to taste like top-notch AAAA, aged sirloin steak. That way, my dinner will taste "good". By the same token, when I go to a high-end, dine-out restaurant famous for their steak and I order steak, my expectation will be higher than that at the HK style char restaurant. The difference is the money I'm paying I'm for the steak at this high-end restaurant and its reputation.

Sometimes we are pleasantly surprised when the "product" ends up exceeding our expectation. In that case, congratulations. If the product does not meet your expectation, you can choose not to use it again.

Use your own discernment when shopping at T&T, Capers or any supermarket.  That's all I want to say.

Back in Valentine day I bought a live uni from Yohan about 9.99 per lb and this one is about $11. There are 5 pieces inside this one. If you compare the size of the piece with the soy sauce bottle, it is actually quite big and really fresh. This is local uni but as good as you can find elsewhere if not better

Yeah, it doesn't look bad at all. (I've never try a live one from TnT yet.)
Just being curious, what's that "jello" thiny in the center?
作者: applekiwi    時間: 2009-4-11 00:05

Oh, since I bought the UNI in the afternoon but want to kept it fresh till dinner, so I put some ice in a sealed sandwich bag and cover it with a glass bowl placed upside down in the middle. The glass bowl then can be used as a cooler plus it keep the shape of the UNI piece.

Actually I bought the UNI from Yohan osaka but I think I see it in TnT sometime. Heard the best time for UNI is Feb March but I seen it again last week.

If you are lucky, you see a nice guy and not busy, they will open up the UNI for you. But don't take it for granted. If you have to open yourself, bring it home wash the outside, place it on the cutting board, use the corner (close to your finger side) of a heavy knife to knock / crack the top of the UNI, try to break in two half but don't press so hard otherwise you squish the meat inside. After you break the shell into half, either use spoon or finger to take out the meat. (softly, tenderly) Wash the meat and clean up the dark colored vein on the meat. I am sure you can tell right away the difference between a fresh one and the one you eat in the restaurant.

I guess the reason the restaurant charge so much for a live UNI is they open it carefully and didn't break it.

applekiwi 發表於 2009-4-11 03:23

Even the geographic background may be close/similar, I don't think the seafood (and some meats, fruits, veggies...) between two places is comparable in many cases (for eg, except salmon). Also the sakura trees/flowers, Japan ones seem to be a lot prettier than here in Vancouver. Maybe the Japan government knows better presentation, or just different kinds of them. Moreover, Japan really knows how to attract tourists (even local people in different areas), for they have different attractions (including lots of regular items and limited editions of themes and food and products) in different cities in different seasons.
作者: applekiwi    時間: 2009-4-11 10:47

Yeah, there are no comparison. Vancouver is too boring compare to Japan. Too bad I can't afford to travel to Japan or HK very often. So that make me searching for Chinese/Japanese food and goods all the time. It is always excited to find something you miss for a long time.
