There is nothing wrong with Chinese style, as long as the food is good. If the Japanese can do it, the Chinese can do it, unless you are racist against the Chinese.

Now, just because this particular restaurant is not good, does not mean other Chinese should not try to be better.

wahahahaha, What a shame? What a bunch of self-hating Chinese you guys are? You people will always be looked down by foreigners, simple as that.

Guess they picked the wrong English name... so far the impression of this place is really so "Negative".
I would love to try any Chinese place that serves "go well with beer/liquor" small plates.
btw do they have liquor license? Since they are 居酒屋... I assume that they do.

I kind of agree with Peter.
It sounds a good idea of Chinese style
Chinese food is good, way way better than Japanese food (I like Japanese food too). And it's just this particular restaurant is not good, doesn't mean the idea is bad.

This is my first post but I've been reading these boards for many years now.

I want to thank Lamukeno for creating this thread and bringing this restaurant to my attention. Despite his bad review, I gave Negative Space a try last night and was glad that I did. One thing that I've learned from experience is to take reviews, good or bad, with a grain of salt. This might seem hypocritical because I write restaurant reviews online (www.dinehere.ca; username: booju), but ask yourself this question: How many great movies would you have passed on if you were to follow every word of advice from the critics? You won't know whether a movie is good or bad until you've watched it for yourself; the same logic applies here.

Here's my take on the restaurant:

Negative Space is located at the corner of Pacific Plaza, a mall that also houses the renown Sushi Hachi. The restaurant itself is not hard to find (yellowpages.ca have them listed), but you would be hard pressed to find somebody who knew Negative Space even existed. Even Google only came up with 1 relevant hit, but I am guessing they just recently opened and have yet to advertise.

Ambiance - 4/5 - The restaurant is small but nicely decorated. The black and white theme is quite apparent in its decor, and you can tell everything is brand new. Overall, the restaurant had a delightful ambiance.

Food - 4/5 - The food here is definitely worth trying, and in my case, coming back for. The waitress recommended the shrimp grenade, which she explained was shrimp meat covered by toast with cheese inside. I laughed a little inside when I heard the funky name, but it turns out to be extremely appropriate because, well, they looked just like grenades! Now, one would never eat an actual grenade, but these were wonderfully delicious. The crunchy outer layer matched well with the mushy shrimp meat and cheese sauce inside, and at a little less than $2 per piece, I think they are well worth it. Full marks for creativity and uniqueness on this one. Next we tried the spicy crab which we all thought was very tasty but probably a notch too spicy. The crab meat was cooked perfectly and as a garlic lover, I love the fact that the whole dish was pretty much covered in garlic. After that, we enjoyed a few different skewers like the chicken gizzard and asparagus wrapped in pork meat, which were all very good. We also tried their "Soup of the Day", which was a Chinese-style homemade soup (the kind our mums make). At first I was reluctant about ordering it because $5 seemed a little pricey for Chinese soup but the size definitely justifies its price. One bowl was enough to feed the four of us, but it came in one big bowl, and we had to share the bowl around. We didn't get to try too many dishes but we were satisfied with what we had.

Service - 4/5 - Service was fairly good throughout the dining experience. Really nothing to complain about in this department.

Overall, the experience is a good one. Even though it's located in Richmond, it felt like we were dining at a new and posh restaurant in downtown, without the hassle of downtown parking and commute. I would characterize the food as Chinese-styled tapas, packed with flavor and great with alcoholic beverages. It's similar to "Beer Houses" in Taiwan or "Sake Bars" in Japan, in the sense that people go there to relax and have a good time. I think they're open for lunch too.

Recommended, especially for folks in Richmond.

doesn't sound good to me... when the OP said everything are deep fried..

我介意係樣樣菜 at least $7 and up 細碟又不好吃,就有點兒那個o羅...

When you eat tapa style dishes, you expect the dishes to expensive and small. So you just have to pay up. Whenever you eat Chinese food, you expect to pay a little more.

I tried it when they first open ~ food is very different and unique ~they told me their food has no MSG at all~ so I think it's quite healthy except they might need a more variety on food selection ~ I think it's a cool place to go and chill wif friends and have a little drink~

lot of restaurant dont use MSG anymore.  they use chicken powder instead.  only about 20 choices in their menu(dinner time)($7+).  4-5 choices(lunch)(around 12 inc. tips and taxex.)  i tried there before.  for lunch mmmmmm............ the food not fast enough.. OMG 4-5 choices only.   for dinner ............  nothing to say..    a women who looks like the owner was playing 15-20 with the customers( may be her friends).  i feel i was eating in the pub(the illegal one) .  haha i think they should open the illegal pub is better idea.

Until I start hearing more convincing good reviews on this restaurant....I don't think I want to eat there again any time soon.

I think "little cow restaurant" is more honest about use of MSG then. I went to "Little cow" for lunch and since on their menu they said that their fish soup noodle has no MSG, I asked them if their other soup bases have MSG. Their reply was YES. because the sauces and ingredients they use (curry paste and satay sauce...etc) already contain MSG.

"Little Cow" has more yummy and better deal food if you want a nice lunch / dinner....

Negative Space Chinese Cuisine....they are trying to turn into Chinese Guu...but not working very well.

It is a good start for them. They should continually improve their product.

tried it on mothers day. Worst of the worst! not much choice in either lunch or dinner menu, expensive price $8.5+ vs less portion. D- is my rating.

so no good at all ?

Yes, totally not good, don't waste your money there, unless they change their menu and make portion to bigger size..

does anyone know if this restaurant changed their menu for the better yet?
or it's still the same thing?

or

they have already "folded" la?

went there for 1st time last week

small dishes and same price as OP said.. $7+ per dishes..
but i think most of the dishes are spicy, but you can order them no spicy.
the atmosphere is quite good , and clean washroom.
the waitress is quite nice and keep coming back to refill water/tea, service is good. i guess that's becoz not much customers there..
but i wouldn't go back again because i don't see any specialty food or competitive price/portion.

We went last weekend.... Food is 2/5.. We tried the "sau lou darn" too, but it was MUSHY inside, which tasted really bad, my husband had 1/2 and refuse to eat anymore...

We also had the steamed pumkin, which taste good, but it's SOOO easy to make, it just pumkin cube, steamed, with soya sauce on top...

The beef noodle is good, quite tasty, but with a bunch of peanuts on top, which is weird.

Yeah, I probably will not go back again.  I personally LOVE tapa style food, but this is a BIG disappointment.

i guess so far no one likes their signature dish "sau lau dan"....
