I would like to get a digital camera for my mum, who is in her 50s. She got some used Canon lens from her friend. Just wonder do the lens fit Canon only or all other brand as well.
I read the mingpao today, which talked about the D500, 5000D & ...., just wonder which one do you recommend for someone who has min. experience/no experience.
Regard to the price, is it better to buy it here or HongKong? Where do you shop for camera in Greater Van, beside futureshop/bestbuy. Thanks.

Canon lens will only fit Canon cameras. However Canon lens are divided into EF-S and EF. EF will fit all Canon cameras and EF-S will fit only Digital Rebels and some others. Have a look at this page,

5000D is Nikon, so won't fit your mom's lens. For person without any camera experience, then it doesn't matter because nowadays all camera have "auto" mode. You can just point and shoot. Then why not just get a cheap point and shoot? Because a DSLR camera has better feature and lens, even in simple mode it will beat a cheap camera.

buying in HK is cheaper but if you want better warranty and service then buy local.
Another option is buy from Canadian online retailers outside BC, that way you can save on PST. Try McBain, Henry's and the Camera Store.

thanks yoursecret. actually i made a mistake, she got the nikon lens.

so as you said she can only get the nikon la.  the mingpao mentioned the 5000D doesn't has "Image stabilizer", just wonder is it a big deal if she is not using the auto focus mode
my cell pic is quite blurry.  but since the machine is much heavy, just wonder is it a big deal.  or image stabilizer is a mush for shaky hands.
in general, how much can we save if we buy it in hk, is it just the taxes? will that be close to 10-20% ar.  thanks.

does not make sense to me, to buy a DSLR camera just  because someone gave  you some
lenses.  ask that friend who gave away lenses for advice on how to use them

if your mom  needs a camera and has minimum  experience, its not your job to  pick a DSLR for her, unless you have used a DSLR yourself, and  is willing to  show her the way
  does any one in your mom 's family has a digital camera, that your mum can use?

if i want to get a car, no matter someone gets me the engine oil or not, i will still buy the car. but it is lucky someone can give me some freebie equip. la. if you are going to get me the gel eyeliner, i don't mind to buy the brush wor.

why it is such a big deal to help mum to do some research ar? you have a really bad relationship with you mum?

no one in our family has a dc, since she is the only one who likes to take photo.

5000D the camera itself doesn't have "image stabilizer" but some of the lens have it. Nikon calls it "Vibration Reduction" or VR. It's useful more in low light condition. If your mom has shaky hands then this will help for sure. Or get a tripod.

Actually I never buys camera from HK so I don't have the numbers for you. Usually I buy online from Alberta stores, relatively close and no PST.

if your mum needs a DSLR , she should do her own research

maanmo , my self likes to take photos, but maanmo has been too lazy to even understand and use all the features of the point and shoot camera

if your mum does not do the research herself about what camera to buy. she is not going to use all the features in the camera some one give her

Forget about the specs - all cameras are good in current market anywayz.
get her one with a GOOD COLOUR - silvery purple ......
she will love it.

did your mom know how to use a 35 mm SLR? that's where my mom started and she loves taking picture of flowers and dance performances.
She got a hands down Canon XT from my bro-in-law and she loves it as her new toys. Most of the lenses that she already owned work with her DSLR. (yes she is a Canon lady)
She even learn to use some simple Photoshop.
May be you can ask your mom to register in some photography courses for senior after getting the camera.

Canon body does not have build-in stabilizer, depends on what lenses she got and what is she mainly shooting, she might not need a stabilizer (e.g. if she got some fast lenses and if she mainly shoot in outdoor daylight).
If you don't mind a used body, craigslist have some for your mom to start with.

But you have to make sure your mom aware of that a DSLR is not the same as a point and shoot camera, it is much heavier and bigger to carry around.

Yes. I am always worried about my mom when she goes out for photo shots.
Last time she fell on her heavy backpack (with 2 lenses, flash, tripole and an extra body) and cracked her tail bone. She was in pain for a long time.

So Tofu may need to think about this part as well.

  dropping the camera is always  a rites of passage
  maanmo  droped the first camera he played with, a couple of time,  the second camera . once.
  maanmo has not dropped his current camera yet, but it was a close call, i tripped and almost fell flat on the ground , chances were,  the camera i was holding in my hand would have hit the ground first
if i did not stop the fall with some ballet technique, the camera would hit the ground and break into two
before my nose follows

the reasoning is , a retired mom should not go out with a DSLR, unless she takes ballet lessons as well
or may be ballroom dancing

first question .. what kind of lens she got ??

If it is freebie from friend .. probably not good lens at all .. or what if they are some old manual focus lens? I doubt your mom wants to do Manual Focus?

Most lower end camera offer "KIT" lens at better value ... and work pretty good for general purpose.

So ..  just check what lens she has now.

Anyway, as goldie said, most DSLR are good nowaday, no matter from Canon/Nikon, to even Sony, they are all similar.

The engine oil vs Car isn't a good example at all .. engine oil ..  ~ $10 - $50 vs $30-$50K for an average car, and in photography world, we all know lens are much more expensive then body .. most photographers decide to use a system because of lens rather then body.

Regarding pricing ..  Price in Canada, is app. the same as in HK, say D5000 kit, $9xx cad, vs $6,xxx HKD, but you get 2 yr warranty here, vs 1 yr warranty if you get it from HK.

if you want to do research for a suitable camera for a retired person who have time to learn
here are some consideration

  learning to use a DSLR takes a couple of years at least
  if one gets a DSLR right now, by the time one begins to appreciate the features in a DSLR, there will be much better DSLR available

so the best way to go is  get a $300 $400, high zoom, wide lens  semi pro  digital camera
it will take all the brain power to learn to use these camera well
and in a year or two,  may be we will have  wonder DSLR coming out
can you imagine what they will be ?,
if you can't , you can buy one now,
then 2 years down the road,  you still  have not learned much about photography, you may be looking
at those newer DSLRs and wonder.. may be may be ,, its time to buy those

she got the af zoom-nikkor ed 70-300mm f/4-5.6d, afzoom-nikkor ed 80-200mm f2.8d & af micro-nikkor 105mm f/2.8d.  which body is good for the above lenses, any recommendation. i don't think they are free.
布小熊, my mum has the slr, but she hasn't touch it for 10+ years, no time ma.  she prefer to get the dslr, then she can take unlimited pics la, no more film ma.  hope your mum is feeling ok now.  i will tell my mum about that, i think this is one of misc. important issue.
we thought about the used one, but then i found out there are lot of stuffs that we need to check on an used body.  so be safe, we rather get a new one.
thanks for the warranty info., i think we will get it in canada, but buy from alberta online store, as you guys suggested.
my mum prefer to get a good one, since this is something you want to do for so long.

I am sorry to say that I haven't keep up with Nikon well enough to tell which model support the AF of the Nikon AF lens which don't have build in AF motor. However, IMHO, The 80-200 f/2.8 and 105mm f/2.8 are good lens, and the 70-300 f/4-5.6 are just some cheap zoom lens, but it's portable. If your mom really want to keep those lens.. then I would say go buy the cheapest Nikon DSLR that would work with the lenses for now, then when she pick backup and know what she is doing, then she can always buy a better DSLR or lenses, or change to diff. brand.

Trust me, DSLR are cheap when you compare it with some good lenses out there..!

I don't quite agree..

Think this way.... getting your driver license doesn't = good driver..! So, knowing how to operate a Point & Shoot or SLR doesn't = to taking good picture either..!

With the right people teaching you, or having the will to learn... I think it takes far less than a few weeks to learn the basic.. on a SLR camera...!

The "D" version of 70-300 isn't that bad at all, just the "G" version is the cheap one.

Both 80-200D and 105 micro are good lens!!

Really chicken rib wor .. all those lens are not bad, especially the 80-200 F2.8, and you need D90 or higher model in order to have AF function .. however, when using those lens on DSLR, you may have minor "back focus " or "front focus " issue .. say the 80-200, @ 200mm range, typical Back focus on D90 etc.

Still, those are minor issue.

So, if your mom doesnt want to spend much, you get her the D90, which is a good entry DSLR, and I do suggest you to get the kit lens as well, since she doesn't hv a wide angle nor daily use lens yet. ( 18-135, 18-105 etc are ok )

Make sure get her a external flash light as well.

I think all D90 are made in Thailand wor ..  even most Nikon low end lens ..

Your 80-200 F2.8 is still made in Japan! ^_^

Low end DSLR such as D5000, D60, D90, and mid end DSLR like D300 are all made in thailand .. you need to go to high end model such as D700/D3 etc ...  to get made in Japan.

Does it matter? sad to say .. but it does ..

i checked the price online today, and i am surprise that the cheapest kit set is from brxxdxxy camera, just wonder does anyone deal with them before. reliable? any freebie?
is it nikon has no internationally warranty? only get warranty from the country you brought it? my uncle got the d90 from hk which the body is made in malaysia, with all the freebies, the price is ~1/3 cheaper. will canadian store give out freebie, like memory card, battery &....
[FS] has this deal during christmas week; Nikon D90+18-108mm VR lens and 70-300 VR lens 999$, sound so good, do you think it will happen again?

NIKON has INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY

But Nikon Canada only Honor warranty to the ORIGINAL owner ..

However, good thing is the Nikon service is in Vancouver, most the time, they won't check if you are the original owner or not, as long as you have your receipt.

It is NOT POSSIBLE to buy D90 ($1000 body ) + 18-105VR ($450 lens ) + 70-300 VR ( $600 lens ) for $999. You either misread it, or got the wrong info.

D90 is NOT 1/3 cheaper in HK ..  unless your uncle lies to you, or again, he may forget the detail ..  D90 is $6xxx HKD .. which is app. $1000 ..  even "WATER" D90, is $5xxx in HK ..

The different is the TAX ..  however, if you buy it in HK, and bring it over, you "SUPPOSE" to pay tax anyway .....

Unless you go to D700, then not worth to buy in HK for ~ 10% cheaper. ( I bought my D700 in HK ..  ~ $18K HKD, work out to ~ $2700, which is ~ $600 less then buying one here, so it does make sense for me to buy from HK, my 5DII Kit, was app. $4100 with tax, worked out to $27K HKD back then, which is about the same price in HK, so I bought it here )

You can go DC fever site to check the price for DSLR in HK.

It is NOT POSSIBLE to buy D90... $999.  actually i found this deal on redflagdeal, but it was back to boxing week 2008......sign...mum should request it earlier.
the current price for kit set with 18-105 len is $9k hkd or $1650 cad (tax inc'd)  but hk 送8GB卡, 相機袋(Nikon), 腳架, 備用電, 清潔套裝, filter, so inc'd the gifts value, it is ~1/3 diff.
anyway, thanks you guys.  will pass info. to mum and she can decide to buy it here or hk la.

Wili you use those " 送8GB卡, 相機袋(Nikon), 腳架, 備用電, 清潔套裝" other then 8G card? When I buy camera stuff from HK, I dont even take those "GIFT" rather then CF/SD card and spare battery ... just waste of space to bring them back .. and even you count them, may be MAX $500 HKD value ...

Extra 1 Yr warranty on body and extra 4 yr warranty on lens from Canada, worth way more then those gift.

One benifit to buy in HK is, you get "DISCOUNT" when you need to fix the camera after warranty period. (or you break it by mistake)

I thought you said she got some Canon lenses, but anyway, I wish I got friends like her's...coz...80-200 f2.8 & 105mm f2.8 are like $1000 brand new.....

but mind you that all lenses she got are tele lenses, even the closest one start at 70mm, on D90 it will become 105mm......so, none of them are wide enough for daily use. So, if you are getting a new one, I suggest you get the one with a kit lens, maybe a 18-55mm.

one suggestion is to borrow a nikon body from a friend and try it out to see if your mom likes it or not lor......

I think it's much easier to buy the camera think some place where they take return within 15days or something to try it, instead of borrow a camera from someone else..!

It's not like that someone is going to borrow the camera to an inexperience person, plus shutter wears can be a essential thing...!

D90 might be too big and heavy for your mom, I think D5000 is good enough

the consumer's experience with digital cameras  particularly DSLR s  is its outdated every 2 years

no professionals will  want to be seen with a two years old DSLR

amateurs ?  unless one is poor, one does not like to play withCanon PowerShot SX1 IS 2 years old DSLRs

just want to give you a little bit update, nikon doesn't has international warranty anymore. asked the guy at broadway camera and also find this on nikon web site.

Nikon digital products sold in Canada have a warranty which is honored by Nikon Canada offices, this warranty is not supported by Nikon offices outside of Canada. Nikon digital products sold outside of Canada also have localised warranties and are not supported in Canada.

canon has north america warranty, only good in us and canada

oh no, my uncle just came from hk to visit us and he was gone already. he just got his for few months, but need to send back for repair once already. he suggested my mum to get the one that made in japan, since his is made in malay and not reliable. but seems like the one that sold in van is made in thailand

Normally, it does not matter where the camera is made. As you know, the manufacturing process is highly automated these days. All these lenses are polished using high-precision equipment in clean labs.

However, it is the FACT that .... NONE made in japan Nikon DSLR .. have more problem then made in japan. ( not talking about firmware or design issue )

based on my own experience...
i thought i was interested in photography,
and the photos, i took in last 4 or 5 years are all documented on this loyaukee forum
most recently in the tread " photodroppings "

when someone bought a new camera,  and discuss it on this forum , we can make a
prediction on how many photos  that camera will take in the next 2 years.
we can base that prediction  on the photographer's past record
( if the camera is more expensive or if its a first DSLR , you can also half the number of
shots that will be taken )

this is one of the nice things of being  a participant in a photography forum
you do not just share your photos, you share your experience  and the way you
grow with photography

when we  recommend a camera for someone,
we would like to check out the memory card , a year or 2 later ,and see what have been
done with the camera. chances are , the camera has hardly been used?

of course,  someone who bought a new DSLR can take it out  and fill it up with 500 shots, but then after it has been done once,  he would not want to do it again. unless
he does it for a living

most non professionals  hardly want to handle a DSLR,  even if they do, most of time in
automatic point and shoot mode

photo takings in the last 2 years

advanced photography may require a DSLR,
but it is not necessary,  what is required is a high level drive and motivation
and an all time consuming persuit
if these persuit and motivation are lacking in the history of photo taking
then buying a DSLR means nothing,  he is probably too lazy to read the manual

Ok, got your point, but I can't quite agree with your conclusion.  I do know enough non-professional that would be out taking pictures all the time...!

But then these people maybe closer to my age group, or represent similar interest, such as hiking, cars, camping, or people who travels quite often..!

BTW, in my case, I know nothing about photography and hardly take any pictures until someone loan me a SLR years ago.., I was totally hooked after that...!  So, someone who shoot very little with P&S may not = don't take much pictures in the next 2 years!  New baby, being grand-mom, going to weddings... attending all sort of special occasions or ceremonies.. can be what trigger the person to start taking more pictures..!

My recommend my mom a Fuji P&S 3-4 years ago...  She used to never take any pictures  (I hardly have any family pictures when I was young), but she is one of the appointed person to take pictures in many occasion at her church fellowship or outing.. !  I am sure she take more pictures in these last 3 years than the XX years before she had this camera..!

However, I have to agree that it is important to find out someone's needs/wants being recommending something....!
