RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - A plane has crashed in what is believed to be an industrial area near the Knight Street Bridge. Alana Lawrence with Airport Authority says the plane is a Navajo, which is a small private aircraft. Unconfirmed reports suggest it went down around 10:15 p.m. near Bridgeport Road.

There's no word how many were on board, but Lawrence believes it was fully staffed and the Navajo can hold up to eight people. Stay with News1130 for more details.

"Two killed after plane crashes in Richmond, B.C.

RCMP have confirmed two people aboard a small light plane have died after it crashed into an industrial area of Richmond, B.C.

Witnesses say they heard a loud explosion near Bridgeport Road and No. 5 Road, near Ikea. Flames and smoke could be seen for hundreds of metres.

"I was sitting in my truck eating lunch and heard this noise of a plane real low, nose pointed straight at the ground and just crashed." Darren Van Leeuwen told CTV News.

It's believed the plane is a Piper Navajo. Emergency officials have evacuated the area surrounding the crash site and are warning people to stay away from the Knight Street Bridge.

CTV Aviation Expert, Mark Miller, says the plane was tracked to arrive at YVR's South Terminal at 10:10 p.m.

Late this evening Assitant Comm. Peter German from Richmond RCMP confirmed two people aboard the plane were killed. It's not known if there are any other injuries. "

Here is an mp3 from vancouver tower right after the crash. Apex 511 is the Navajoe that crashed, it was a few miles behind an Airbus also inbound for landing at YVR.

I suggest that the Transport Authority should do something to prevent more plane crash happening in Richmond.Luckily it did not crash in the site of night market and it is not weekend.Otherwise,large group of dead people will be expected.

not the concern.. Richmond is said to be unsafe for many things..e.g. flooding, earthquake.. and now airplane.

but, die or not, is up to the sky... as old motto, if you are unlucky, u can go out and hit by a car.. or even suddenly kill by any reason.

Richmond is a 福地. 大家有福同享.

I think he was too freak out.... I am sure he was having dinner in his car not lunch.
It happened at around 11 pm

For those know about aviation,

Thursday night at 0630Z; Wind 080 @ 5;
26R: LOC on; GP on; DME on; (ILS operational) Light setting 1; RVR A/B/C 6000'+
08L/R and 26L: (not operational)

It made me think they were sinking or stall while doing their approach. Tail wind must caught them badly.
