WOrking as a full time IT Network Administrator, my suggestion is stick with 32bit OS unless you 3GB+ RAM is not sufficient, unless you enjoy troubleshoot computers. Personally, I am running Vista 64bit on my main computer, but then I use it mostly for x64 Photoshop CS4, and some basic video editing (I am finally playing with 1080p video).
There any compatibility issues, not so much hardware, some plugins for IE either 32bit or 64bit still aren't running properly, and you will need firefox as an alternative. And yes, there are other issues as well. I don't quite care since I own 3 relatively fast computers, and only this one is running on Vista64. I also have full access to my work's terminal server, and my work workstation most of the time.
If you like to have some decent bootup speed, I am currently using SSD as my main Boot Drive, all profile and temp is on my D: regular HD, and my main storage is on a RAID5 setup. (50+/MB/s transfer speed)
