I understand your comparison, it's like some people who buy race ready stock cars for racing. Then there are those who likes to put things together and get their hands dirty and race it. One thing for sure, the time and effort spent fixing things is still cheaper than buying something ready-made! I admit I am cheap, and I am not letting Apple take any more of my $$$.
The mentality are different, therefore the marketplace can accomodate both. There is absolutely nothing wrong about it, it's a matter of choice. At the end of the day, when I brag about the new ROM I made/improved in XDA gives me more motivations to keep doing it. This is innovation.
