You know tons of people who play basketball well? How many of them got mentioned by Time magazine or ESPN?

The reason Jeremy Lin got so many supporters in the US is that he is already on the radar screen of some basketball scouts. That was why Time magazine, and ESPN did an article on him. Whether he can make the NBA is another thing, but he is not just some random kid who plays basketball.
