0 ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) - An Abbotsford landlord has been handed a two-year jail sentence for terrorizing his tenants in October of last year.
Paramjeet Jandu lived downstairs and rented his upstairs suite to Brian Tjepkema, his wife and their two kids. They say he would stand at the end of the driveway and stare at them. He also threw a sledgehammer through their window and he even threatened to burn down his own house.
Tjepkema says Jandu terrorized his family for months, and was finally arrested after he poured cooking oil all over his suite and turned on the stove.
Tjepkema says his kids were terrified at first, but he's taught them how to forgive. "My daughter, she doesn't talk about being scared of him now. What she talks about is how she feels sorry for him, and we pray for him almost on a nightly basis."
Jandu was convicted on several charges, including attempted arson and uttering threats. He was also given three years of probation.
Tjepkema says he now wants to set up a program that prevents this from happening to another family.
He went to his MLA, asking him to set up a homeowner registry for potential tenants to see if the person they are renting from is a threat to their family. "If he has any kind of record for being a pedophile or anything serious like that," he said. "That way, you'll know about anything that might put your children's safety at risk."
He says the province has had a hard time introducing a program like this because of privacy issues and bureaucracy. That's why Tjepkema is asking people to write letters to BC's Solicitor General Shirley Bond at the following address.
