VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - For the second year in a row, BC has licensed a record number of new doctors, but will that make getting in to see one any easier?

According to the latest annual report from the College of Physicians and Surgeons we've got 387 new doctors in BC, compared to 333 doctors last year.

However, a report from the BC Medical Association warns the answer is not in the numbers alone because of the 13,000 doctors in this province less than 11,000 are actually practicing medicine.  Most of them are either doing research or teaching.

"I've been lucky to have one [doctor] for probably over 20 years, a family doctor who looks after my entire family," says one Vancouver woman who considers herself lucky.

"My doctor is great.  I do have trouble getting in to see her sometimes, I have to admit.  I think it's great that there are more doctors as long as they take more patients," says another woman.

The BCMA report also concluded there is a major gap between filling positions in hospitals and providing communities with the care they need.
