VICTORIA (NEWS1130) - BC Ferries is doing some course-correcting following the threat of a class-action lawsuit by angry customers.
The corporation is now offering a one-time refund on assured loading tickets, after saying it wouldn't.
It covers prepaid fares purchased between 1984 and Monday. The refund period starts now and runs until Oct. 24.
"The issue was that the tickets actually expired and people felt that just because their ticket had expired they should still have their money and I think 'expired' is a pretty straight forward word but there was some confusion by customers," says BC Ferries boss David Hahn. "This will eliminate that confusion."
Refunds will only be done online, and from now on prepaid cardholders will be required to register on the corporation's web in case they need to be contacted.
SFU Marketing Professor Lindsay Meredith says while the refund program sounds extensive, he doesn't see the corporation shelling out that much money.
"Going back to 1984 sounds like a little bit of, what shall we call it, putting on the brave face," he says. "What they'll actually have to fork over, probably unused tickets for this year and going back into last year, maybe a bit of the year prior to that. That will be the bulk of the action."
Meredith says this is a move by a company eager to repair its public image, especially given the outcry over David Hahn's salary and pension package. |
