I guess your expenses are typical for someone in North America, but if you really want to save, you got a long way to go.  If you can save 70% of your after-tax income, that's what I call savings.

to achieve 70%, you have two options

1) increase your top line - income to a level where you can save 70%
2) cut your expenses

the choice is yours

but some ppl can easily save 70% or more

the principle part of your mortgage should not be counted as an expense though
you are just saving in a different way

there's an interesting phenomenon.

fat people can't stop themselves from eating more so they get fatter
people who are underweight don't like eating and they just keep losing weight

some people who have money don't actually like to spend, like Buffett, because spending is not fun to him.  Some others who don't make that much but tend to spend every cent to make themselves happy, so they remain poor.

Get rid of the pet.
Jog on the street instead of going to the gym/tennis/etc
Don't buy DVD, watch online.
Cut all dinner out at night.

typically you grow when you

1) face some hardship and successfully conquer it
2) live in a new environment and adapts successfully

by keeping your kids at home and paying for their tuition, i am not saying they will definitely turn out to be losers, but there's a higher chance that they will.
