My many trips to Big White, SunPeaks, Silverstar were all by car. However, there is risk involve when weather doesn't cooperate.  I had an accident in a snowy day 2 years ago.

Greyhound will be your best choice but I don't think they drop you right off at the resort.  If you're going to ski/snowboard there for a weekend, check http://www.destinationsnow.com/, they organize bus trip to interiors.  Usually leaving Friday evening and return on Sunday.

4WD and proper snow tires are all your friends.  Check your rental car, I think most rental here don't have snow tires on.  Have fun and be safe.

Prevent driving after dark if you hit a snowstorm.  I still think we wouldn't be having the accident if we didn't stop at Merritt for that long dinner.  (always excuse, haha..)

I had chains with me twice but never need to use them.  The other time, I was on my friend's car which didn't have chain.

Will chain save me from the accident?  Properly yes, since I wouldn't able to driver that fast if we had chain.

HWY1 gets clean up pretty quick, at least one lane.  Taking over big trucks on the unclean lane is really scary though.  And those trucks drive "fast" even under bad condition.

Enjoy the powder snow there.
