Additionally, think about how long you intend to keep the car. (We're only looking at BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and VW here.)
If you only intend to keep the car for 3 - 4 years, I would just lease any of them. It'll cost you more, but you'll have a completely painless "ownership" experience with no surprise expenses since everything is covered under warranty.
If you plan to keep the car for 4 - 7 years, buy the 7 year extended warranty, and go enjoy the car. Little things will probably start breaking in the 4th year, and more stuff will require attention as the car ages. Once extended warranty runs out, start thinking about selling / trading the car in before the next big repair rears its ugly face.
If you plan on keeping the car for more than 7 years, go with a simpler Volkswagen with fewer bells and whistles. The car will still drive well, and the repairs will at least be affordable.
