For lofans, 15-20% before tax is normal.
it is no point to tip on taxes, I think 15% tip on food and service is reasonable,
but for wine? what do the servers  do other than uncorking and pouring
your wine?

It's a sad North American thing... Waiters and waitresses here mostly get paid very little and they based a lot of their income on tipping.
It's very diff in Europe and thus tipping isn't really nee ...

Well, at least the servers are entitled to minimum pay plus benefit in Canada.
Many states south of the border the servers get only $600 -$1000 base salary, they have to rely on tip.
Try to tip less they will chase you for it.
In Europe, waiter is a  respectful profession and they treat their job as lifetime career.   I tend to tip more at the high end dining venues because
they would really try hard to make your dining an memorable experience while most of the Chinese restaurant waiters just see it as
a temporary job, never bother to upgrade themselves since the tips are pooled, nobody bother  to do extra work.

Just curious, after the HST is imposed, will you still give out much tips as now?

It is true that the restaurant biz is declining, but on the other side
the  supermarkets and cooking schools are doing very well.
Does it tell you something?

幾同意你講囉。。。我一般若是 OK SERVICE 都會比 10%﹐但也按 SERVICE 好壞來調整加減。。。因為他們的工作人工低﹐但其實做得好辛苦﹐比 10% 都係基本。。。不過有時某D餐廳預先加 10% TIPS 落張單度我就會很火滾 ...

Once I went for Pho with my wife, they added 10% surcharge on my bill, then GST on top, almost
$19 for 2 bowls of  lousy  Pho. before tip.
And the guy did not even ring it in on the cash register: just NS (No Sales) and money in his pocket.

The government might as well legalize all  the pots and  dope, then
collect HST on them, a huge revenue
