At the meanwhile I would rather they use more "nuclear" because of the scale...
Those hydro, wind, solar cannot "satisfy" the consumption gap in a short run...

What are the causes to dessertification?

1) Climate change - can't fix;
2) Water resources misuse - mostly due to human activities, people are "squeezing" the natural resource out from the environment without repaying...

In power generation (in general), 2 important components are confining:

1) Heat source;
2) Water

When you look at the map of China, changing the method of power generation (substituting fossil fuels with hydro, wind, nuclear...) in the eastern part is comparatively easier (just $$). In the western part it's difficult. An easier way to do is to produce the power in the east and run a long way via high voltage powerline to power the west, but again, it's $$$$...

When more people are dying because of the pollution, people will know the $$$ they save from power generation actually pay off in a different form...

Natural gas is good. However, it requires a lot of initial investment on building "HUGH" facilities to store them and they can't be big... Supplying by the Russia is a bit of a headache, you can tell by the Europe experience...

BTW, if the technology of utlitizing those "flammable ice" is feasible, that would be another great source. Again, disputes along the offshore area with surrounding nations are problematic...

The map shown is the distribution of "particulate matter" with length +/- 2.5um, the so-called PM2.5 - the smallest particle size that would trap in our breathing system.

There are different sizes of sand in the desert, probably the one in Sahara and Saudi Arabia are finer than those in Australia...
