Not all photos need to be in a bell curve shape. In fact, photos with bell shape are *usually* boring.  If this photo is a bell shape, it will be very overexposed. That's why most photos taken with auto exposure look bad as the camera tries to protect highlights and everything into a bell shape.

This picture has a good exposure.  The baby and father is at the entery of store front, therefore closer to the light.  Your are an engineer, you must understand better the inverse square law than most of us here.  The light difference between the background and the subject makes the subjects pop more.   Cowboy made a decision to expo for the baby, and let the background darker to draw viewers eye to the subject.

That's the reason photography lesson no. 1 is "White on White, Black on Black, White on Black and Black on White.

That's also why I don't care much for the matrix exposure or auto exposure on cameras,  it is hard to program aesthetics into cameras.

This image here is so ironic of the current China.  The young man with a quintessential Chinese face  performs miracle on the dough, and yet he is uninterested in the show, and so mechanical he is barely alive.  The shutter speed/ light on the subject also help to tell the story.

It is my version of China, entire country is a Foxconn factory.  It is the sort of photos in National Geographic.

"I think of intense vibrant colors and the photos are shot in an editorial way."
No, useless you think working in Foxconn is a vibrant thing.

It is even better if the photo has the florescent green cast. ie, not so white balanced corrected.

"for an image where the background is in shadow area, where your 2 main subject, the man and the baby also have a good level exposure diff."

I think the exposure diff is more due to skin tones, the baby just has lighter skin from I can see.  You can't have a black background in weddings? I am not getting this one.

This may be a better example.  A real photo of my son =D

Ascough's images trend to have a very heavy processed look, but he does give good example how to work the light.

I don't see high contrast light/dark background is a failure.

Guess people paid for photography doesn't seem to have same taste as photographers.

Wife just spent $40 to buy kid's school photos.  2 hard/front light (don't know it actually give any exposure  value except to give 2 catch lights on each eye), soft, flat, bad color, printed at bestbuy. But mom thinks they are the best pictures ever.

Most of the thing we care is bs.  I think I just quite photography.
