Paid for my wedding straight out of our savings (80% mine, 20% my wlfey's). No need to borrow in to red to host a wedding.

Many of my friends who wedded recently opt for not to put out any extravagant event: i.e. no banquet. That helps them in keeping their budget under control.

Here in Canada, wedding can be very frugal, or it can be extravagant.

I give you 3 examples, each with an approx. budget:

Scenario 1: wifey's good friend wedded a caucasian male. Wedding cost is only approx. 1600CAD (a small catering reception for their closest friends and relatives, all held at the provincial marriage minister's home in N.West). Then after the wedding, they all headed off to a nearby AYCE guay-low banquet, all paid by themselves (guests).

Scenario 2: my friend's wedding held at Cecil green in UBC, facing the sea; with a small string quartet playing music at the background. small reception catering on-site, with marriage minister on-site and what not. Dinner @ the then previous (changed hands already) 2nd floor Chinese restaurant @ Raddisons in Rmd (the entire restaurant). Also including flying 8+ guests from HK and back: total est. over 86,000CAD+. Hung-liang wedding package + diamond ring came to an addition 8k on top of that.

Scenario 3: wedding in the Winter (Jan) @ Minoru Chapel with minister on-site, wedding gowns and tux all rented from Susanna's (package deal, with photos, etc. for 3800CAD), chapel + minister for 400CAD. Dinner banquet (8tables worth) for approx. 4800CAD all-inclusive. Wedding rings (Japanese cast platinum rings for both, bought locally in Rmd) for an additional 2100CAD. Total: 11,100CAD.

Of all 3 scenarios, the middle one cost the groom an arm and a leg. Obviously, he had to borrow into his line of credit and various means to pay for it.

Let's just say that scenario 2 was a wedding (along with the relationship) that gone bad as the event unfolds.... (sorry, cannot provide any details beyond this point but nonetheless: it's a true story)
