It's pretty simple, as soon as China loses control over Hong Kong, foreign countries and companies can use HK as a weak point to create trouble for China.
Here is a scenario:
Google comes in and set its base in Hong Kong as the main office for whole Asia, then financially support a party to control hong kong. Google hires 50k people in HK and pay them higher than other tech company in HK and create very good image. Go in stock market in HK and the market price goes like crazy, everybody makes money in because of Google. After established enough, HK Google can do huge attack on China censorship and make China look very bad, then start using the Government power to make a bigger issue on 64, everyone goes on strike for 1 month and ask China to answer to the citizen about 64. Then obviously, China won't like HK for the embarrassment, and will not look after HK economy (HK economy will suffer so bad if China doesn't help HK).
This is just from 30 seconds of thinking about it, it can be much worse if someone as half smart as Bush want to think up of a plan to attack China.
The list can go on and on, but the main idea is some country can use Hong Kong as a sandwich between China and itself, in a bad way. As citizen in HK can be easily affected by money and benefits.
Some say this won't happen. Another point is EVEN if there is 5% chance this will happen, China will not take the chance, because it can't be undone. So what can China do about it now? Take slow steps and be caution. If something fishy going on, they can still stop. At the same time, citizens can be more educated about what is freedom, as well as China's own politic improves at the same time.
Btw, I have nothing against Google, I use all google product. I just used the name as an example. |
