Mayors support raise in minimum wage
B.C. has lowest minimum in country

2 Comment(s)  8 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Twenty-one mayors are joining the B.C. Federation Labour in calling for higher minimum wage in the province. B.C. has the lowest minimum wage in Canada at $8 an hour.

The mayors want to see it raised to $10.

The federation is sending the premier a letter signed by the mayors, which includes those from Vancouver, North Vancouver and Delta.

Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan says the wage should not have been allowed to drop to the lowest spot in Canada. "There should have been incremental increases over the years," he says.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business showed up with friends representing the restaurant and retail sectors, saying the wage hike threatens the jobs of the very people it's supposed to help.

A rundown of minimum wages across Canada:

Province             General Wage
Alberta               $8.80
BC                     $8.00
Manitoba            $9.50
New Brunswick   $9.00
Newfoundland     $10.00
NWT                  $9.00
Nova Scotia        $9.65
Nunavut              $10.00
Ontario               $10.25
PEI                     $9.00
Quebec               $9.50
Saskatchewan     $9.25
Yukon                 $8.93

CAD10.00 is quite reasonable these days...

Keep going up ??

O M G ..

Working in Timmy ..  Mac etc ..  $12 plus an hr ( say 5 times more then HK) ..  even as nanny ..  $10 plus per hr ..  (7 times more then HK)

Well ... I am from HK, and I think most LYK are from HK .... so ..  more or less will compare to HK ( or other asian countries )

It doesn't matter what is the min wage, no one will work for $8/hr anyway ....  so, that is just a SYMBOL!!

From $8 to $10 is certainly a big jump. Now w/ the HST, I don't know how the small business survives.

Nobody work for min wage in Cowtown, alright.
In Vancouver Chinatown, there are still people working for less than min pay,
and no EI coverage. And the Indian farmer workers too

I believe small Chinese restaurants will get a big hit...

From different viewpoint, why they underpay the entry level staffs
for decades?

The main problem is not the low minimum wage in B.C..  It's the high cost of living.
The basic food in B.C. is higher than the most of Canada.
We should focus on how to lower the cost of living instead of higher minimum wage.
Higher minimum wage = even higher cost of living for the rest of population.
Higher minimum wage = hire less people.
Higher minimum wage = more people get EI.

A jump to $10 is too big to swallow for many small business.
Increase the minimum wage a bit and ALSO figure out how to reduce the basic living expense in B.C. is more appropriate.

And why would big union leader like Jim sinclair  cares?
he makes 100 K a year by simply  making noise.
Most of the unionized workers get overpaid already.
Just wait until the NDP come in power again, you know what is hardship.
I survived  twice, in 70's and 90's, maybe I go to join Catpiano in Cowtown.
