It does seem rather weird to me, that a lot of mainlanders does seem to dislike learning English. Then why did so many of them come here in the first place? So puzzling. This seem to be quite different from the attitude of HK/TW immigrants back then, even if they were rich. Most of them do seem to genuinely at the very least want to learn English. Some even enjoys a more mainstream lifestyle.

On the flip side, there indeed is an exodus of ex-Canadian Hongers that have moved back to Hong Kong. I personally went back to HK for vacation for 3 weeks and find the experience suffocating. For 5 days I sneaked to Japan for some fresh air, and by the end of the entire Asian trip I was very relieved of being back home (Vancouver). Most of the friends I know in HK actually makes less and lives a much inferior lifestyle in HK than here (squeezing between busses and MTRs when they could be driving a bimmer here).

I am just dumb founded and simply cannot understand why many of them chose to go back to HK and be 2nd tier citizen (no right to vote), when I can enjoy all that Canada has to offer. The air, the skiing, the golfing, the driving, the tracking, etc etc. Canadian on average also has a higher income and has better spending power in general than HKers. Theoretically speaking, one does not only has the right to vote as a Chinese Canadian citizen, but can even run for various roles in the government if one wishes thru a completely democratic process. Not something as straightforward in HK. I simply fail to see why so many people chooses to go back, and is sad because with the dilution, most all the Chinese Canadians left now are of relatively new mainland immigrants these days.... Canadian Honger circles is left to be relatively much more sparring and few...

I actually think Canadian starting point is much higher than HK. If you happen to become a big gun in HK, along with the tax difference, you probably make more in HK. That said, the odd of someone making it super big in HK is low. Someone making an odd 6 figure or 2 here is much higher.

Totally agree with the night life comment, especially if you are sticking to the Asian scene. Out of the University crowd, it's completely non-existent. Maybe need some help from Big C Sister on this one.

Extremely cheap stuff is cheaper in HK. Once you get something of moderate quality, the value goes down very quickly. If you go high-end of anything in HK, it quickly costs an arm and a leg. One can enjoy mid/high-end living in North America in a much more affordable fashion than one can in HK. This applies to eateries, shopping and accomodations. Especially true if you are spending CAD in the US.

A typical HKer doesn't understand, or have forgotten, what cold really feels like, that's why.

It is true that HK doesn't have much heating. But 11 degrees C does not constitute a cold weather warning. We have some homeless weed smokers out in our DT streets surviving thru sub-zero temperatures. Some are probably too stoned to get their asses into a shelter~

Hmm... I think most that makes it big in HK is more because of relationships, not because of their resume. Relatinoship is important no matter where one goes. Just that in North America, even if you don't have very good connections, you can probably make a very decent living given you have a decent resume. In HK, relationship comes first.

I honestly don't know that many people making over say 50k HKD before 30 years old in HK. The ones even worse off are the ones that think they can't get a good career in Vancouver, only to make even less in HK, along with the false hope that there's more 'opportunities' down the road.

I do know plenty here that makes over 100k before 30 years old here. In terms of whether money goes further in HK or Van. For my lifestyle at least, it definately goes a lot further here. The biggest ticket items normal people usually spend is a home and a car. Both which are significantly cheaper in Van than HK. Then you get to going to the driving range, 18 holes, hitting the track, the slopes, etc. Much cheaper in Van. Then you get to the air, the commute, the scenary, etc. HK vs North America is simply not even in the same league. It is without a doubt that the average middle class of Van have much better quality of living here than HK.

Now one can argue that things gets even better if one moves state-side (California specifically). Higher income, lower housing prices, lower price on everything, and the sunshine~ The trade off is a smaller/less concentrated Asian community.

So the only thing I can think of as benefit for living in HK, is just pure number of Asians there. I know a guy or 2 that used to be the dryest single guy in Van for YEARs, still have like a bunch of gals going after him in HK. Van still give you a mini Asia experience with Richmond specifically. If one don't care about any of these, I'd say get a TN/H1B and move to the real strong country of this planet. Amazon Prime to the door, can't be beat~

I think this sums up what I said. Quality of Life Index by Numbeo, factoring in Local Purchasing Power given Avg Income. HK is not even close to Van, let alone SF.

HK Quality of Life Index: 97.52
Van Quality of Life Index: 158.71
SF Quality of Life Index: 174.10

There's something like these for Taiwanese. Why dun we have something like this for Hongers? The Hongers remaining really all gone or too old for these kinda things in Vancouver?

I would've gone if I speak mandarine and they don't advertise it as a Taiwanese event. Not thick skin enough to go in with my crappy mandarin and tell them I'm a honger but wanna solicit a TW event LOL.

That said, maybe time to organize some Honger events?

A honger event that is not limited only to hongers. At least it's not a TW only event or something. If non-honger wanna join, more than welcome. But at least need some room for hongers to get out of their small circle sh_t already.
