Replacing price tags on products

today I saw the most dispicable thing happen @ Metrotown superstore..

I was with my family when I saw 2 chinese ladies pushing two carts. Each had a 5-drawer shelf in their cart. So I looked around to see if it was on sale...I saw the price tag at the shelf was $31.99/each.

Then I walked closer to the ladie's carts and saw that it had a yellow sticker with $4.96 on it. I recognized the yellow sticker to be from the clearance kids clothing in the next aisle. So I stayed close to those ladies and they just kept adding item after item into their cart..all with a yellow price tag ($3.96, $4.96..etc).

One of the ladies then appeared with an iron, with a $3.96 sticker on it. She said to the other lady "哇﹐這個要成$40! 但我家裡已經有一個﹐要不要好?" then the other lady said "又不是貴﹐你看﹐其他人都想買﹐快D拿走啦"....

I told my husband about these 2 ladies so he went towards them to listen a bit more.....then what he heard was amazing:

Lady 1 : " 怕不怕啊﹐如果他問起來該怎麼辦?"
Lady 2 : "扮無知就得啦!當聽不懂﹐死口否認就okay ga la!"

Then the second lady took ANOTHER iron and it magically turned into $3.96 again.

I didn't SEE them put the stickers on but I was pretty sure those items are not clearance..and I also heard them say to pretend they don't understand english when asked. Then I went to buy my stuff and after I paid, they were at another counter, beside mine. The cashier didn't even scan the items...she just say the price tag and typed it into the machine and they paid $4.96 for a $32 shelf and $3.96 for a $40 iron. The next lady skipped couple of persons and bought the same items, same price.

i feel so ashamed to see chinese people doing this...BTW, they spoke CANTONESE.
but then, the cashier was also stupid not to scan the item or question the cost...if she had scanned the barcode, she would've seen it was much more expensive than they priced it.

sigh~

it was at superstore and they did NOT scan the barcode. The ladies had taken some of the demos off the floor..therefore the item didn't have a barcode on them. For example, there was like 6 or 7 irons on display..she took one of them from the display (they weren't locked down) and she even went over to a power plug to try it out. She didn't take a boxed iron to the cashier so there was no barcode..and the cashier didn't bother asking either.

I think they took the sticker off the shelf and the girl didn't ask for a price-check so she just plugged those numbers in..we saw the whole process. She didn't even try to scan them.

BTW, I have no "proof" that they stuck the stickers on..I just heard them discussing it after they did it. How can I proof that they had done the scam? And even if I told the cashier, the ladies could've just acted dumb and pretend that they didn't know the real price. They were already discussing on what to do if they were caught...

they could really just say :
"Oh, I saw this somewhere somewhere and the price tag was already on it. Oh, so it's not on sale, oh well. Then I won't buy it."

The problem is..i DIDN'T see them replacing the price tags...
what I saw was...them taking products with price tags mysteriously appearing on them...and I've only heard them mention what to do if the cashier questioned. Like I said before, what would probably happen even if I told on them is that they'd be questioned and they'll just act stupid and pretend they didn't know anything.

IF I saw them replace the price tags, I would definitely tell someone..but what I don't have is hard evidence..and no eye-witness to seeing them stick the stickers on either.

I'm not trying to put the blame on the cashier but she definitely didn't take time to notice nor to scan the barcode that was on the shelf. So please don't blame me or put my 良心 on the line because what could I do?

All I can say is that...from what I gather and what I've heard, it is very likely those 2 ladies replaced the tags..but I have no evidence of any sort. And the truth is, their thought-up excuse is quite viable in such a situation..unless someone comes up and pinpoints them to replacing the stickers.

tell me, what would you have done? Would you have walked over to those ladies and told them what you THOUGHT they were doing? Or would you goto a cashier/customer service rep and tell them what you SUSPECT? Even so, do you think they'd get caught?

I'm pretty sure it's not the first them they'd done this..and there were lots of people around too. Unless I have evidence, it's pretty much my word against theirs and they could've easily walked away from the sale and said "Oh, I didn't know. Then I won't buy it"

I only mentioned that they spoke Cantonese...because if I didn't mention it, I'm sure we'll get comments like "Asian? Must be from China.."..etc etc.. I'm sure it's a personal problem but reporting that they're Asian is just part of the fact.

The thing is, I find there are quite a lot of negative ideas about people from China on this forum..just like the person who gave the licensing officer $200. There was discussion about that she MUST be from China because of her last name. Then lots of people mention about bribery in China..etc etc..

the truth is all I heard was these ladies speak cantonese, were Asian. but I have no idea where they're from. They could be from ANY asian country for all I know. Mentioning ethnicity doesn't necessary mean racism.

maldini:  I never said this is a Chinese problem? All I said was..I saw some chinese ladies doing this sort of thing. Why is everyone so sensitive nowadays that one cannot mention the ethnicity of the "crooks" in their posts? So next time I see something happen, should I even mention the gender? Or will that be labeled as sexism too? I am not discriminating against Chinese nor am I implying all crimes committed this way is by Chinese. All I wrote is a summary of what I saw and it so happens this time I saw 2 Chinese ladies who did it.

Chobit:  It is easy to say now how I should have went to the staff..but what would you do if you were holding your baby around, trying to get your groceries done and checking out of the supermarket? By the way, they left the area before and I didn't follow them. I went to buy baby formula. Wouldn't it be weird and dangerous to follow them around with my baby with me? And I saw them check out AFTER I left superstore. I was standing outside feeding my baby when I saw them check out with no problems. What should I have done? Rush over to the cashier, stop them in the middle of the transaction and tell them what I THOUGHT happened? Again, I DIDN'T see them switch the price tag. This is all an assumption brought up by their conversation.

As for the comment about how caucasians are smart, I never implied or wrote which culture the cashier belonged to. In fact, there are smart and dumb people in every culture..and not all CEOs are smart and not all cashiers are lower-class either. Each person is in a different situation and maybe some people are smarter than those who excel academically and some people are more socially-smart. Being stuck in a job that is considered "lower-class" doesn't mean the person is automatically intellectually placed in that level.

AND, I don't read the newspaper or magazines at a grocery or bookstore. I look at the cover and if  I want to buy it, I will. Not everyone looks through the books or magazines as you have implied.

thank you 華美子

突然很多人都有assumption...assume我歧視講廣東華的人﹐assume我歧視沒有price check的cashier...assume that I've never "mixed" with other ethnic groups..assume that we all read newspaper and magazines in the supermarket without paying...etc etc

why are there so many assumptions? how many of you guys posting in here actually know who I am, what I believe in and what I do? How do you know I haven't "mixed" in with other ethnic groups? Do I really need to explain myself that I've lived here for almost 20 years and have "mixed" in with other ethnic groups nicely? That I used to have best friends that were Indian, Chinese, Korean, White?

it's easy to put the blame on someone else..but before you do, please have the facts straight and don't make "assumptions". If you really want to blame, blame it on something that you are sure about, based on concrete facts.
