I didn't buy life insurance though.

To be honest, do you think my break down is truly a "miserable" life style? Internet, cable tv, cell phone, all in place. Also with a bit spare cash. It's far from luxury but it's comfortable I think.

I don't believe in life insurance. Plus, I'd rather leave my saving to my family.

I guess the discussion is $500K property with $60K annual salary is affordable or not. My discussion shows it's affordable. It doesn't make a great life, but it's not miserable either. If you prefer more spare cash to live on, either get a cheaper property, or get a better job. Or just go renting instead so no property tax and utility to worry about. If I want to treat parents a nicer meal I just don't spend anything on entertainment for a month, save up that $, that's all. If you want to get something, save up! I think that's the way.

If the discussion is "Van house is affordable or not", I still think it's affordable. There are lots of condo $300K range for 500 sq ft, which IMO is more than enough space for single person.

Of course, buying property with duo income is better, and that's usually the case.

And I do buy moon cake on 16th...

I don't think my case is hypothetical at all. It's all base on numbers. But as I said, if you think you want to live on more cash, get a cheaper property, $300K for a downtown 500 sq ft condo, or a bigger place in suburban area. It's your choice.

And why would we always want to have decent lifestyle while at the same time not wanting to make more and just blame about the high price? Why do we expect able to go travelling once a year, go skiing in winter, having a decent cell phone with data plan, with cable tv w/ movie channel, playing PS3, and having frappacinno once a day? Those are all luxury. If you want a big purchase in life there is sacrifice. There is no problem with renting. There is no problem with living in Surrey and getting work in downtown and take skytrain to work.

I'm cheap, I never paid $100. But if you don't want to spend that $, don't go to wedding, buy a gift instead. If it's western wedding there is usually a gift registry too.

Gift to boyfriend doesn't have to be expensive. I give handmade card. Cook him a nice meal. It's the thought that counts right?

New mattress doesn't come every 10 yrs (or even more). Microwave...you can always get one for $70 in London Drugs.

I do think the current generation (including myself) is kinda spoiled,

My case is base on $60K income for $500K property. $50K down. It's affordable. But if you think it's too low cash to live on then it's fine. But I don't think that's miserable lifestyle.

With lower income, don't get $500K property, get cheaper one right?

As I mentioned b4, I lived on $700/month (excluding house expense) before, it's actually more than enough.
Cell phone $30
Internet/TV $100
Car $300
Saving $100
Food/entertainment  $170
When I started to earn a bit more then I give $ to parents.

No no, I mean I only spend $700 a month , not counting any housing expense though. I don't mean I'm living in 700K place la! Don't think I can afford it w/ my current income too.
And I don't say I make 60K la. It's just an example.

To be honest, I don't think Vancouver house price is low. I agree it's high. But is it so high to a point that one can never buy a place, I doubt it.
